I understood that the question was whether loud noise was conducive to reverent worship. Both are loud.

Amen - I believe there are many good Christian rock groups. The younger generation is drawn to that type of music, so it is better to be sitting in a Christian venue, rather than let the devil entice them into a secular setting.

Back to the 'noise' controversy -

Psalm 66:1 Make a joyful noise unto God, all ye lands.

Psalm 150:5. Praise Him with resounding cymbals; PRAISE HIM WITH LOUD CLASHING CYMBALS.

Ouch - you can't get much worse than that. -

Remember folks - timbrels are drums.

I'll be praying that God reveals the truth to him. Some day when God really lets him feel HIS presence, he will start to understand. We all start out doing what we think is right until God shows us a better way.

I praise God that at least he is listening to Christian music and that he is living his life for Christ, not the world.

Carmela,

Yes, that is what I was trying to point out (for me)

The fact that some play the drums so loudly it is very distracting. And the beat does have an influence on us.

I have a friend who's husband is so very hooked on christian rock, he only likes that, says that is the way he can feel God's presence.
He was raised with very strict policies on music, so it is like he is rebelling, but doing it with christian rock instead of secular.

That is a really good question. There is a Christian woman that comes to my school sometimes and leads worship, we have church every morning before classes. She taught on this a little. She is very talented in this area.

I don't know exactly why drums aren't listed in the bible but I do know the affect of a drum. They can be good at time or they can hinder worship. She gave us examples by playing the drum and she showed us that many of the Christian songs use to same drumming style as secular (non-Christian) songs. Also, when people beat a drum it's usually hard and loud and that can push God away.

Then, she changed the beat to a softer beat and we could feel God's presence come. When she went back to the other beat, God's presence lifted. I was amazed.

Drums have been used in warfare at my school though so I don't believe they are completely bad. When Pinecrest first started Wade Taylor (the founder) didn't allow any drums to be used. That has now changed but a part of me wishes it didn't. Some people get on the drums and beat so loud and hard that it's more of a distraction then worship.

Have you ever tried to worship to music that is loud and full of banging drums? For me, I can't really worship that way. When I worship to soft, calmer music I start to feel God's presence because I am able to quiet myself and listen to Him and wait on Him. When the music is loud and jumpy, so to speak, I can't find that quiet place as easily.

If I'm cleaning my house and I want something to get me in an upbeat mood while I do it, then I listen to the other music. However I'm not in worship at that time. My focus is on getting the work done and I will praise God, but I can't actually worship and listen in that atmosphere.

I hope this makes sense.

thanks Hisgrace,

I had heard something to that nature before but someone argued that in that way- a piano would be considered a drum because it too was a percussion instrument.

what I was told was that the "drum" that we know of today is used in the same way in pagan rituals and that the timbral was not.
The timbral is not the instrument used in the christian rock bands.

It is interesting to learn all of this history connected to the "drum".

This is not an all out attack on Christian contemporary or Christian rock, because I have enjoyed this music, and would be glad to know that it is ok....

but if not, I will give this up too as I have done so many other things for HIM.

Timbrel - small hand drum similar to a tambourine.

2 Samual 6;5
And David and all the house of Israel played before the LORD on all manner of instruments made of fire wood, even on harps, and on psalteries, and on timbrels, and on cornets, and on cymbals.

This has been on my heart and I wanted some clarification.
I do not know how to "re-start" a thread so I just will paste this question that has been posed before as this is my question as well [Razz]

I see Stringed instruments, Cymbals, Timbral, Organ, Trumpet, Psaltery, Harp, but I don’t see drums in the Bible, at least not in the KJV. There are no drums in heaven either as far as I know, but there are trumpets and singing.

Why are drums not mentioned as an instrument of praise? Is it because they beat to time and there is no time in heaven?

I must say I have listened to many contemporary groups in the past and have enjoyed them, it is only recently that this has begun to be a concern for me...maybe the Holy Spirit is speaking to me?
I was pretty stubborn about it before, so maybe I was not listening to the Holy Spirit.

I looked for "drums" in the Bible and have not found them.
Through some reading I have discovered that drums were used to "bring" certain spirits.
That is why they are not in the Bible.?

This is just new ground for my thinking...and I wanted some answers...
