Not as much detail, but a possible 7th time,(would have been the first)
Exodus 3:1 - Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law, the priest of Midian: and he led the flock to the backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb.
2 And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed.
3 And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt.
4 And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I.

How many times did Moses ascend mount Sinai?

A lot of Christians think that Moses went up mount Sinai once, or maybe twice, but six times, are you kidding me?

ASCENT 1

Exodus 19
1 In the third month, when the children of Israel were gone forth out of the land of Egypt, the same day came they into the wilderness of Sinai.

2 For they were departed from Rephidim, and were come to the desert of Sinai, and had pitched in the wilderness; and there Israel camped before the mount.

3 And Moses went up to God, and the LORD called to him out of the mountain, saying, Thus shalt thou say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel;

4You have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eagles' wings, and brought you unto myself.

5Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine:

6And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.

DESCENT 1

7And Moses came and called for the elders of the people, and laid before their faces all these words which the LORD commanded him.

ASCENT 2

8 And all the people answered together and said, All that the LORD hath spoken we will do. And Moses returned the words of the people to the LORD.

9 And the LORD said unto Moses, Lo, I come unto thee in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with thee, and believe thee for ever. And Moses told the words of the people unto the LORD.

(Was that an ascent or not, "Moses told the words of the people to the Lord"?)

10 And the LORD said unto Moses, Go unto the people, and sanctify them to day and to morrow, and let them wash their clothes,

11 And be ready against the third day: for the third day the LORD will come down in the sight of all the people upon mount Sinai.

12And thou shalt set bounds unto the people round about, saying, Take heed to yourselves, that ye go not up into the mount, or touch the border of it: whosoever toucheth the mount shall be surely put to death:

13 There shall not an hand touch it, but he shall surely be stoned, or shot through; whether it be beast or man, it shall not live: when the trumpet soundeth long, they shall come up to the mount.

DESCENT 2

14 And Moses went down from the mount unto the people, and sanctified the people; and they washed their clothes.

15 And he said unto the people, Be ready against the third day: come not at your wives.

16 And it came to pass on the third day in the morning, that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud; so that all the people that was in the camp trembled.

17 And Moses brought forth the people out of the camp to meet with God; and they stood at the nether part of the mount.

ASCENT 3

18 And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly.

19And when the voice of the trumpet sounded long, and waxed louder and louder, Moses spake, and God answered him by a voice.

20 And the LORD came down upon mount Sinai, on the top of the mount: and the LORD called Moses up to the top of the mount; and Moses went up.

DESCENT 3

21 And the LORD said unto Moses, Go down, charge the people, lest they break through unto the LORD to gaze, and many of them perish.

22And let the priests also, which come near to the LORD, sanctify themselves, lest the LORD break forth upon them.

23And Moses said unto the LORD, The people cannot come up to mount Sinai: for thou chargedst us, saying, Set bounds about the mount, and sanctify it.

24And the LORD said unto him, Away, get thee down, and thou shalt come up, thou, and Aaron with thee: but let not the priests and the people break through to come up unto the LORD, lest he break forth upon them.

25 So Moses went down unto the people, and spake unto them.

Note that Exodus 19:24 says that Moses was instructed to “come up, with Aaron”, but it appears that Moses later took, not only Aaron, but Moses also took Nadab, Abihu and 70 elders with him in ASCENT 4.

BEFORE ASCENT 4 took place, Moses first performed a number of tasks in the camp. And so Exodus 20 starts with God appearing in a thick cloud and speaking to the people of Israel in the camp and Moses is down there with the people, and God tells them the 10 commandments and other statutes.

Exodus 20
1 And God spake all these words, saying,
2 I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. [and so on ....]

18 And the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed, and stood afar off.

19 And they said to Moses, You speak thou with us, and we will hear you: but let not God speak with us, lest we die.

20 And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not.

21And the people stood afar off, but Moses drew near unto the thick darkness where God was.

(The above all takes place in the camp below.)

22 And the LORD said unto Moses, Thus thou shalt say unto the children of Israel, Ye have seen that I have talked with you from heaven.

23Ye shall not make with me gods of silver, neither shall ye make unto you gods of gold.

AND then from Exodus 20-23, while Moses is down below in camp, God gives them more statutes and ordinances and commandments, until in Exodus 24, ascent 4 occurs with Aaron, Nadab, Abihu, Joshua and 70 elders:

ASCENT 4

Exodus 24
1 And he said to Moses, Come up unto the LORD, thou, and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel; but you shall worship afar off.

2 But Moses alone shall come near the LORD: but they shall not come nigh; neither shall the people go up with him.

But BEFORE Moses took those men up the mountain, Moses first did this in the camp:

3 And Moses came and told the people all the words of the LORD, and all the judgments: and all the people answered with one voice, and said, All the words which the LORD hath said will we do.

4 And Moses wrote all the words of the LORD, and rose up early in the morning, and builded an altar under the hill, and twelve pillars, according to the twelve tribes of Israel.

5 And he sent young men of the children of Israel, which offered burnt offerings, and sacrificed peace offerings of oxen unto the LORD.

6 And Moses took half of the blood, and put it in basons; and half of the blood he sprinkled on the altar.

7And he took the book of the covenant, and read in the audience of the people: and they said, All that the LORD hath said will we do, and be obedient.

8 And Moses took the blood, and sprinkled it on the people, and said, Behold the blood of the covenant, which the LORD hath made with you concerning all these words.

ASCENT 4 NOW TAKES PLACE

9 Then went up Moses, and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel.

10 And they saw the God of Israel: and there was under his feet as it were a paved work of a sapphire stone, and as it were the body of heaven in his clearness.

11 And upon the nobles of the children of Israel he laid not his hand: also they saw God, and did eat and drink.

12 And the LORD said unto Moses, Come up to me into the mount, and be there: and I will give you tables of stone, and a law, and commandments which I have written; that thou may teach them.

13 And Moses rose up and his minister Joshua and Moses went up into the mount of God.

(So in ASCENT 4 in Exodus 24:13, Moses and Joshua go up a bit higher than Aaron, Nadab, Abihu and the 70 elders.)

14 And he said unto the elders, Wait here for us, until we come again unto you; and, behold, Aaron and Hur are with you: if any man have any matters to do, let him come unto them.

So Aaron and Hur and Nadab and Abihu and the 70 elders and apparently also Joshua remain in one spot on the mountain, while Moses goes up higher in the mount and this time Moses stays 40 days and 40 nights:

15 So Moses went up into the mount and a cloud covered the mount.

16 And the glory of the LORD abode upon mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days: and on the seventh day he called to Moses out of the midst of the cloud.

17And the sight of the glory of the LORD was like devouring fire on the top of the mount in the eyes of the children of Israel.

18And Moses went into the midst of the cloud and got himself up into the mount: and Moses was in the mount 40 days and 40 nights.

During these 40 days and 40 nights in Exodus chapters 25-31, God gave Moses the instructions for making the tent of the congregation and its vessels.

And after that, in Exodus 31:18, while Moses is still in the thick cloud with God, God gives Moses “two tables of stone”:

Exodus 31
18 And when He had made an end of communing with him {Moses} upon mount Sinai, He gave Moses [b]two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God.

Then in the next chapter, Exodus 32, the people are waiting below but apparently Aaron and the elders have come down from the mountain, and it appears that only Joshua remained on the mountain to wait for Moses.

But Aaron and the elders have apparently come down and now the people in camp persuade Aaron to make a golden calf:

Exodus 32
1 When the people saw that Moses delayed to come down out of the mount, the people gathered themselves together to Aaron, and said to him, Up, make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we don’t know what has become of him.

DESCENT 4

Exodus 32
7 And the LORD said to Moses, Go, get thee down; for thy people, which thou broughtest out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves.

15 And Moses turned, and went down from the mount, and the two tables of the testimony were in his hand: the tables were written on both their sides; on the one side and on the other were they written.

16 And the tables were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, graven upon the tables.

17 And when Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said to Moses, There is a noise of war in the camp.

18 But he said, It is not the voice of them that shout for mastery, neither is it the voice of them that cry for being overcome: but the noise of them that sing do I hear.

19 And it came to pass, as soon as he {Moses} came nigh unto the camp, that he saw the calf, and the dancing: and Moses' anger waxed hot and he threw the tables out of his hands and broke them beneath the mount.

20 And he took the calf which they had made, and burnt it in the fire, and ground it to powder, and strawed it upon the water, and made the children of Israel drink of it.

21 And Moses said unto Aaron, What did this people unto thee, that thou hast brought so great a sin upon them?

22 And Aaron said, Let not the anger of my lord wax hot: thou knowest the people, that they are set on mischief.

23 For they said unto me, Make us gods, which shall go before us: for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.

24 And I said unto them, Whosoever hath any gold, let them break it off. So they gave it me: then I cast it into the fire, and there came out this calf.

25 And when Moses saw that the people were naked; (for Aaron had made them naked unto their shame among their enemies:)

26 Then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, Who is on the LORD's side? let him come unto me. And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together unto him.

27 And he said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Put every man his sword by his side, and go in and out from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbour.

28 And the children of Levi did according to the word of Moses: and there fell of the people that day about three thousand men.

29 For Moses had said, Consecrate yourselves today to the LORD, even every man upon his son, and upon his brother; that he may bestow upon you a blessing this day.

ASCENT 5

30 And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses said unto the people, Ye have sinned a great sin: and now I will go up unto the LORD; peradventure I shall make an atonement for your sin.

31 And Moses returned unto the LORD, and said, Oh, this people have sinned a great sin, and have made them gods of gold.

32Yet now, if thou wilt forgive their sin--; and if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book which thou hast written.

33And the LORD said unto Moses, Whosoever hath sinned against me, him will I blot out of my book.

DESCENT 5

34 Therefore now go, lead the people unto the place of which I have spoken unto thee: behold, mine Angel shall go before thee: nevertheless in the day when I visit I will visit their sin upon them.

35 And the LORD plagued the people, because they made the calf, which Aaron made

Then in Exodus 33, a sacred tent is provided and God speaks to Moses face to face in the sacred tent. And then in Exodus 34, ascent 6 occurs, in which Moses goes up alone:

ASCENT 6

Exodus 34
1And the LORD said unto Moses, Hew thee two tables of stone like unto the first: and I will write upon these tables the words that were in the first tables, which you broke.

2And be ready in the morning, and come up in the morning unto mount Sinai, and present thyself there to me in the top of the mount.

3 And no man shall come up with thee, neither let any man be seen throughout all the mount; neither let the flocks nor herds feed before that mount.

4 And he hewed two tables of stone like unto the first; and Moses rose up early in the morning, and went up unto mount Sinai, as the LORD had commanded him, and took in his hand the two tables of stone.

DESCENT 6 But was Moses again with the LORD 40 days and 40 nights?

Exodus 34
28 And he was there with the LORD 40 days and 40 nights; he did neither eat bread, nor drink water. And he wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the ten commandments.

29 And it came to pass, when Moses came down from mount Sinai with the two tables of testimony in Moses' hand, when he came down from the mount, that Moses wist not that the skin of his face shone while he talked with him.

After that, Israel builds the tabernacle of the congregation and its vessels by mount Sinai and Moses does not ascend mount Sinai anymore until they depart from mount Sinai.

But did you realize that Moses apparently ASCENDED MOUNT SINAI SIX TIMES? I was very surprised to read that.

love, Eden
