Mark 10:31
“But many who are first will be last, and the last first.” (NKJV)
Jesus explained that in the world to come, the values of this world will be reversed. Those who believe but who still seek status and importance here on earth will have none in heaven. Yearning for position would cause people to lose any position they might have. Those who have desired to be Christ’s disciples and have humbly served others are most qualified to be great in heaven. Rewards in heaven are given not on the basis of merit or “time served” or other earthly standards. What matters in heaven is one’s commitment to Christ.
Jesus seems to defy logic in this exchange about winners and losers. He seems to be saying: The reasons why people achieve power and wealth are exactly wrong for my kingdom, where the poor and hungry who come to faith are models of citizenship, and those who serve are the true leaders.
