Exodus 20: 3: Thou shalt have no other gods before me. 4: Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: 5: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; 6: And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.
It speaks of the worship of statues and images.
It does not speak of the eastern cultural bowing in honor to ones elders, or as a sign of respect.
To bow down, with the Hebrew word for down:

Thou shalt not adore them, nor serve them: I am the Lord thy God, mighty, jealous, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me ----------Exodos 20:5
I think when these words were translated into Chinese, it had been misinterpreted. "Adore" means worship, but worship and adore in Chinese have two meanings, one worship ,the other kneel. The whole China, including Hong Kong and Taiwan, thinks that we can not "kneel" to anything, including Buddha's status, Lord's images, Cross, even your own parents, the nation's flag, and the dead man's grave.
What about the US?
