Matt. 11:2-3 Even John the Baptist was subject to doubt about Jesus being the Christ. The man who gave all his life to announcing His coming and baptized Him and saw the dove and heard the voice of God from heaven proclaim Jesus as his Son, had a doubt. It’s tempting to think belief that Jesus is the Christ would have been so much easier had you been one of the disciples who talked with Jesus on earth and seen His miracles first hand. Consider the reaction of the disciples who were in hiding after the crucifixion. When the women discovered that the tomb was empty and ran to tell the disciples, “they considered it an idle tale and they did not believe them.” (Luke 24:1-12) Even on the road to Emmaus, while walking with Jesus, they failed to believe. (Luke 24:13-24) Thomas climactically demanded proof of the nail-scarred hands. Perhaps it wasn’t so easy for those who were there to see and experience first-hand to consistently believe. Jesus answered Thomas in John 20:29 “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe.”
Heavy stuff.
