This letter was directed against Gnostic teachings, which were rampant at the time of the early Christian church. Gnosticism denied that Jesus was incarnate and as a direct consequence, promoted immorality. This reference to the 'sin that does not lead to death' may be directed to those persons who were unrepentant of their immoral conduct, unaware that it would lead to spiritual death.
Paul was at pains to inform early Christians that our salvation was no excuse to continue in sin. Seems like John was also having to do battle against a culture that promoted sexual immorality and loose living, a lot like today....
A more important question to ask is why does "Once Saved Always Saved" do not understand a believer can commit this sin.

1 John 5:16. Speaks of praying for those who are sinning we should pray for to restore them back to God. But John speaks of another sin that will lead to death. What does this mean ? Eternally lost or a sin that ends in death ?
