The United States declared a national energy emergency on June 6, 2022. The emergency – declared to exist with respect to the threats to the availability of sufficient electricity generation capacity to meet expected customer demand – will stay in effect for at least 24 months or until it’s declared terminated, whichever occurs first

“A robust and reliable electric power system is not only a basic human necessity, but is also critical to national security and national defense,” the president said in the declaration.1

“Multiple factors are threatening the ability of the United States to provide sufficient electricity generation to serve expected customer demand.”

 -

The declaration continues:

These factors include disruptions to energy markets caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and extreme weather events exacerbated by climate change.

For example, in parts of the country, drought conditions coupled with heatwaves are simultaneously causing projected electricity supply shortfalls and record electricity demand.

As a result, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and the North American Electric Reliability Corporation have both warned of near-term electricity reliability concerns in their recent summer reliability assessments.

In order to ensure electric resource adequacy, utilities and grid operators must engage in advance planning to build new capacity now to serve expected customer demand.

Solar energy is among the fastest growing sources of new electric generation in the United States.

Utilities and grid operators are increasingly relying on new solar installations to ensure that there are sufficient resources on the grid to maintain reliable service. Additions of solar capacity and batteries were expected to account for over half of new electric sector capacity in 2022 and 2023.

The unavailability of solar cells and modules jeopardizes those planned additions, which in turn threatens the availability of sufficient electricity generation capacity to serve expected customer demand.

Electricity produced through solar energy is also critical to reducing our dependence on electricity produced by the burning of fossil fuels, which drives climate change. The Department of Defense has recognized climate change as a threat to our national security.

In recent years, the vast majority of solar modules installed in the United States were imported, with those from Southeast Asia making up approximately three-quarters of imported modules in 2020.

Recently, however, the United States has been unable to import solar modules in sufficient quantities to ensure solar capacity additions necessary to achieve our climate and clean energy goals, ensure electricity grid resource adequacy, and help combat rising energy prices.

This acute shortage of solar modules and module components has abruptly put at risk near-term solar capacity additions that could otherwise have the potential to help ensure the sufficiency of electricity generation to meet customer demand.

Roughly half of the domestic deployment of solar modules that had been anticipated over the next year is currently in jeopardy as a result of insufficient supply.

Across the country, solar projects are being postponed or canceled.

Thanks to Climate-Change Fanatics and Green-Energy Whackos, 2/3rds of US Faces blackouts this Summer!

 -

Tough news keeps coming for Americans struggling with high energy prices. Not only have gas prices broken records for the past several weeks, now a good portion of the country is being told they should expect rolling blackouts, as we enter the hot summer months.

The North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) officially released its summer report last week and almost two-thirds of the country should prepare for a possible blackout.

The report from NERC includes a harrowing map that shows most of the nation should stand ready for possible blackouts this summer.

The reason for these coming blackouts is clear: a mandated transition to clean energy. The Wall Street Journal editorial board writes:

“Welcome to the “green energy transition.” We’ve been warning for years that climate policies would make the grid more vulnerable to vacillations in supply and demand. And here we are. Some of the mainstream press are belatedly catching on that blackouts are coming, but they still don’t grasp the real problem: The forced transition to green energy is distorting energy markets and destabilizing the grid.”

One of the chief proponents of forcing a transition to clean energy has been Richard Glick, the chairman of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). In February, he and the other Democrat commissioners at FERC tried to force through a policy that would have made building new natural gas pipelines and infrastructure almost impossible. Thankfully, the leadership of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee blasted the move. Senators Joe Manchin and John Barrasso made clear they wouldn’t stand for it. FERC pulled back the rule, for now.

Glick has been renominated as the chair of FERC. The Journal editorial board continues: “His re-nomination is a clear and present danger to the U.S. electricity supply.

The war in Ukraine and surging energy prices haven’t deterred Democrats from their anti-fossil fuels campaign. Will widespread power outages finally make them realize they're harming all of us?”

The Biden administration’s policies are resulting in a hot, dark summer for millions of Americans. With the summer heat just getting started, there is no relief in sight.

Valued Michigan DTE Customer,
With summer on the horizon, I thought this would be a good time to share with you how DTE works to make sure you have the energy needed to live, work and learn every day, all year long.

A recent report was published by the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO), the organization responsible for overseeing the electric grid across 15 states and one Canadian province, detailing the summer outlook for the region. In the report, MISO warned of potential generation capacity issues in the Midwest that may lead to rolling brownouts. I’ve heard concerns from some our customers regarding this report that I want to address.

As the largest energy producer in the state of Michigan, DTE has the energy needed to serve our customers – plus reserves – even during the hottest days of summer. We do not expect rolling brownouts or any issues with generating the electricity you need to live your life all summer long.

 -

The Midcontinent Independent Service Operator (MISO), a regional grid operator which covers covers 15 U.S. states and the Canadian province ofMiManitoba, recently announced a Renewable Energy Impact Assessment to gauge the growth of solar, wind and related forms of technologies to their vast network of utilities and transmission lines. MISO has over 174 GW of generating capacity, of which 13% is renewable based, and mostly wind. While solar is relatively small in the portfolio, it’s expected to grow by gigawatts in the coming years, dynamically changing the region’s power profile.

These are touchy times for studies concerning the role of solar power on the grid, as the last Trump Administration’s preference for coal and use of energy mythology has created a politicized atmosphere. The most striking example has been the ongoing U.S. Department of Energy study where Energy Secretary Rick Perry tipped his hand by alleging that heavy use of renewable energy may endanger the “national security” aspect of the electric grid. SOURCE

DTE says it will work closely with MISO and have extensive preparedness plans in place in the event of a Midwest regional MISO issue. When the region – not necessarily the DTE service territory – is at risk of falling short because of high demand, we are required by MISO to respond to the call to make sure as many people as possible in the Midwest have the energy they need.

There are several ways we can help the region, including sending our excess generation back to the grid. DTE also has a large number of customers on voluntary interruptible rates that can be curtailed, if needed, to help maintain regional system reliability. And if the region really needs our help, we may issue a public appeal and ask our customers to turn down their thermostats a couple degrees or turn off any lights or appliances they’re not using.

I can’t emphasize enough that we do not anticipate an issue for you or our other customers in Southeast Michigan this summer.

Our focus continues to be on providing clean and reliable electricity to the residents of southeast Michigan. As we continue our generation transformation to cleaner sources of power - like natural gas and renewables, we want all of you to be reassured that DTE is carefully planning this transition. In fact, our new Blue Water Energy Center power plant, which will launch at the start of June, will be the cleanest, most efficient natural gas power plant in the United States.

Rest assured, DTE is preparing for the hot summer, and will make sure we have enough electricity to serve you.

Wishing you all an enjoyable summer,
Trevor Lauer
President and Chief Operating Officer
DTE Electric
