As usual...all eyes are on the Middle East. It wont be long now before "all of the nations of the earth" are gathered against her......and you and I both know what that means.

President Bush accused Iran and Syria on Monday of supporting militants seeking to undo the fragile Middle East peace process and warned they would be held accountable.

Bush issued the warning at a news conference with Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi on a hot day at Bush's central Texas ranch.

Berlusconi, currently president of the European Union, called for European solidarity with the United States amid French attempts for Europe to separate itself from America.

"Selfishness, narcissism and division will never win," Berlusconi said. "We need to revive the huge strength of cohesion."

On Iraq, Bush said he would welcome more international support for helping increase security in the chaotic country, where American troops continue to die every day under guerrilla attack by Saddam Hussein loyalists and others.

"The more people involved in Iraq, the better off we will be," said Bush, who is under increasing political pressure to bring home U.S. troops.

But he doubted a new U.N. resolution was necessary as a mandate for the support, saying the existing resolution 1483 "empowers countries to make a proper decision to get involved in Iraq." Some countries are asking for a new resolution, and U.S. officials have not ruled it out entirely.

Bush's blast at Syria and Iran was unprompted. It came in his opening statement as he talked about the possibility for progress in the Middle East, with Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas coming to Washington for talks on Friday with Bush and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to follow in the days ahead.

"Today Syria and Iran continue to harbor and assist terrorists. This behavior is completely unacceptable and states that support terror will be held accountable," Bush said.

Bush urged Middle Eastern governments including Syria and Iran to support Middle East peace efforts.

"Both Prime Minister Abbas and Prime Minister Sharon are showing leadership and courage. Now it is time for governments across the Middle East to support the efforts of these two men by fighting terror in all its forms," Bush said.

A senior Bush administration official said Bush raised the topic as a timely reminder that the war on terrorism continues and that it is a hopeful moment for Middle East peace efforts.

Bush and Berlusconi have been close allies on the Iraq war and its aftermath. Bush said he told the Italian that the United States would not be cowed by the guerrilla attacks.

"We're patient, we're strong, we're resolute, and we will see this matter through," he said.

Bush fires new warnings to Iran, Syria, North Korea

President George W. Bush (news - web sites) issued new warnings to Syria and Iran, accusing them of "unacceptable" conduct in supporting and harboring terrorism.

Bush said it was time for all governments in the Middle East to support Israel and the Palestinians as they strive to end their conflict.

"This includes the governments of Syria and Iran," Bush said in a joint press conference with Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.

"Today, Syria and Iran continue to harbor and assist terrorism. This behavior is completely unacceptable," he said.

Bush added that states which he said support terrorism will be "held accountable" and that terrorism undermined the prospects for Middle East peace.

The US President also warned North Korean leader Kim Jong Il Monday that developing nuclear weapons would "alienate" him from the world, after new revelations on Pyongyang's program.

Bush said he still believed the nuclear crisis could be solved diplomatically.

He said, the United States would work with regional powers including China, South Korea (news - web sites), and Japan to convince Kim Jong-Il that a "decision develop a nuclear arsenal is one that will alienate you from the rest of the world."

But Bush shrugged off reports that Pyongyang had opened a second plant to process plutonium, concealed to avoid detection by US satellites.

"The desire by the North Koreans to convince the world that they are in the process of developing a nuclear arsenal is nothing new, we have known that for a while."
