Japanese Urged to Leave Iraq by Wednesday
Posted: Sat, 25 Jan 2003 0:32 AEDT
Japan has called on its nationals living in Iraq to leave the country by next Wednesday because of a possible US-led attack there.
The Kyodo news agency reports foreign ministry says its basic policy is to ensure Japanese nationals in Iraq prepare for the worst case and to have Japanese evacuate well in advance of a possible attack.
Chief UN weapons inspector Hans Blix is due to submit a report on Iraq's weapons declaration and its cooperation with arms inspectors to the United Nations on Monday.
Members of the UN Security Council are to hold consultations on the report on Wednesday.
A foreign ministry official says a travel advisory had been issued on Thursday, recommending that Japanese nationals in the Iraqi capital "voluntarily evacuate".
