Smoke and fire
A helicopter drops water onto a wildfire on the Santa Cruz Mountains near Morgan Hill, Calif., Tuesday, Sept., 24, 2002. Dry brush and hot weather helped spread the fire, which has grown to 1,600 acres, destroyed two outbuildings and is threatening at least 50 rural homes on the east side of the Santa Cruz Mountains.

Firefighters Struggle to Contain Growing Wildfire 30 Miles From Los Angeles
GLENDORA, Calif. Sept. 23 — A wildfire burning 30 miles northeast of Los Angeles grew to 4,000 acres Monday as firefighters struggled to contain the flames in blistering heat and rugged terrain.
The blaze created a ceiling of brown smoke that draped Glendora and other small suburbs in the foothills near the city.
Linda Steinberg, a U.S. Forest Service fire information officer, said crews were protecting 77 cabins and Johnstone Peak, home to ham radio repeaters, cell phone towers and other transmission devices.
The wildfire erupted Sunday evening near Camp Williams and Camp Follows, two privately owned campgrounds. Wind fanned the fire and at one point it threatened homes and forced 300 residents and 2,000 campers to flee. The cause of the fire was under investigation
