Bush will act alone if need be , says Perle
By Toby Harnden in Washington
(Filed: 09/08/2002)

A senior Pentagon adviser has delivered a blunt warning that President George W Bush would not hesitate to act unilaterally against Saddam Hussein if he had to. He added, however, that he was convinced Tony Blair would win over the doubters in Britain and support a war.

Writing in The Telegraph today, Richard Perle, head of the Pentagon's defence policy board, said: "I have no doubt he [Mr Bush] would act alone if necessary. But he will not be alone when the time comes."

The hard-line message came amid mounting criticism from Labour MPs and European politicians that Mr Bush is rushing headlong towards war with Iraq.

It also follows the results of secret polling last month by Mr Blair's pollster, Philip Gould, which showed that the British public is uneasy at the prospect of an American-led military campaign.

Mr Perle countered this opposition by saying Mr Bush's determination to oust Saddam was both justified and would win support.

"Neither the president nor the British prime minister will be deflected by Saddam's diplomatic charm offensive, the feckless moralising of 'peace' lobbies or the unsolicited advice of retired generals."

Drawing a comparison with European appeasement of Nazi Germany, Mr Perle writes: "A pre-emptive strike against Hitler at the time of Munich would have meant an immediate war as opposed to the one that came later. Later was much worse."

In a further sign of gathering momentum in Washington, State Department and Pentagon officials are to meet six Iraqi opposition groups today.
