A Palestinian attacker opened fire Sunday near the Damascus Gate of the old city of Jerusalem, and three people were reported dead, 17 wounded, after an ensuing gunbattle, according to a National police foreign press spokesman.

The gunman was among the dead. Police shot and killed him after the gunman opened fire on an Israeli truck belonging to the Bezeq communications company.

In the shooting attack which occurred shortly before noon local time, the gunman, a 19-year-old, arrived at the Damascus Gate "pulled out a pistol and fired at a truck of Bezeq workers that passed by," Jerusalem Police Chief Mickey Levy said.

"He hit the driver, then opened the door and shot also at the security guard. Police at the scene, border police, stormed the terrorist," Levy continued.

"In the exchange of fire between the terrorist and border police, the terrorist was killed," he added.

Levy said two other people were killed, a passerby hit during the shootout between the terrorist and police, and someone on the Bezeq truck.

Israel Radio identified the fatalities as an east Jerusalem man and the Bezeq security guard.

Levy said another six people were wounded. Medics at the scene put the wounded figure at 11.

Police described the shooting as a terror attack. It took place several hours after a bus bombing in northern Israel in which 10 people were killed.

The radio initially reported that police were chasing a second gunman, but Levy said he knew of only one terrorist.

Traffic arteries were shut in downtown Jerusalem throughout the hourlong melee.
