web page ROME (Reuters) - A huge swarm of locusts has devoured grain and vegetable crops in a farming area of southern Italy and pinned many residents in their homes.
"There are millions of them," television showed one farmer saying on Tuesday as he waded through an army of locusts at his farm near the town of Andria in Puglia province.
Ianniello Vincenzo, who heads the Bari office of Italy's biggest farmers' group Coldiretti, said the locusts, believed to have come from north Africa two days ago, had infested fields across several square kilometres.
"The locusts are doing severe damage to crops and disrupting farm work," Vincenzo told Reuters. "Many people are virtually held hostage in their homes. Nothing like this has happened in the area for many, many years."
The television also showed dense swarms of locusts eating up crops and tomato plants ravaged by the pests.
Authorities were discussing steps to combat the invasion, Vincenzo said.
