Safed , small town located in Northern Israel, 900 meters (3200 feet) above sea level in the mountains of the Upper Galilee, she has magnificent views east to the Kinneret and the Jordan River For a long time, Safed has been a well kept secret, even to most Israelis. However, according to the great mystics of the past, Safed is to play an important role in the final redemption.
The history of Safed is intricately interwoven with the history of Jewish mysticism, Kabbalah. Orthodox Kabbalists believe that one of the key mystical texts, the Zohar, was written by 2nd century sage Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai, who is buried about five miles from Safed on Mount Meron. The huge Lag B'Omer gathering on Mount Meron is for the Orthodox, a pilgrimage to Bar Yochai's tomb
