SUICIDE ATTACK KILLS ONE, BUT LARGER DISASTER AVERTED
OCTOBER 11, 2002: A dramatic and life-risking attempt by two civilians may have averted a massacre Thursday morning near Tel Aviv when a suicide bomber slipped while trying to get onto a bus during rush hour.
The bus driver and another passenger, thinking the bomber was an innocent passenger, got off the bus to help him when he slipped. When the two discovered the man had an explosive belt strapped to his waist, they seized his hands to prevent him from detonating it, and shouted to the passengers on the bus to flee.
When the passengers were far away, they released the bomber's hands and ran. The bomber then blew himself up a short distance from the bus.
Bus driver Baruch Neuman said that before getting off the bus, he had "no idea the man was a terrorist... We started checking him. When we opened his shirt we saw the [explosives] belt. We saw the wires. I was in shock. We each grabbed one of his hands. I knew that if he blew himself up there would be a lot of dead people."
Once the bus had emptied, the passenger helping him pin down the bomber looked at Neuman.
"'We must let go together and run,' he said. We flew out of there. Then the bomber got up, walked a few meters and exploded."
An elderly woman was killed and more than 30 people injured.
"I saw the terrorist run after us and then I heard the explosion," said Niri Salam.
David Baker, an official in Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's office, said that Palestinian terrorists have declared "open season on Israelis," and held Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat responsible, saying he did nothing to prevent terror attacks.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.
