quote:
Php 3:17 ¶ Brethren, be followers together of me, and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an ensample.
18 (For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ:
19 Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.)
20 For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:
21 Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.

1 Cor 4:9 For I think that God hath set forth us the apostles last, as it were appointed to death: for we are made a spectacle unto the world, and to angels, and to men.
10 We are fools for Christ’s sake, but ye are wise in Christ; we are weak, but ye are strong; ye are honourable, but we are despised.
11 Even unto this present hour we both hunger, and thirst, and are naked, and are buffeted, and have no certain dwellingplace;
12 And labour, working with our own hands: being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we suffer it:
13 Being defamed, we intreat: we are made as the filth of the world, and are the offscouring of all things unto this day.
14 ¶ I write not these things to shame you, but as my beloved sons I warn you.

2 Cor 2:14 Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.
15 For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish:
16 To the one we are the savour of death unto death; and to the other the savour of life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things?
17 For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ.

From the cross of Christ, there comes, on the winds, an aroma. That aroma is the knowledge of God. As we carry the cross through the world, that aroma rises to God and He is pleased.
That aroma reaches, also, to those being saved and those who perish. To those being saved, it is the victorious smell of life. To the perishing it is the smell of death.
The smell of death draws vultures and condors who want to eat on our flesh just as false teachers want to live by our substance.
The smell of life reminds us to drive those birds away as Abraham drove the birds away from the carcases of the covenant with God that made the land of Canaan his inheritance.
(Canaan means merchant, by the way. A merchant is one who buys low from a producer and sells high to a consumer. He never produces anything except words, himself. Pr 20:14 It is naught, it is naught, saith the buyer: but when he is gone his way, then he boasteth.)
Carry the cross. Drive the vultures (those who hate the cross, hate to work with their hands, and which are perishing) away from your children and your grandchildren so that your little ones may smell the fragrance of life.
Drive those false teachers away and draw those who resemble the example of Paul near.

I wonder if Jesus and John were being used by Satan to harm the potential or possible believers by tempting them to use discipline in an harsh and bold way, OF COURSE NOT!. First we did away with discipline and punishment in the schools and home for our children and now we want to do away with discipline in the church and preach health and wealth theology.
Since all of our hearts are desperately wicked and we are not to lean to our own understanding. I think it best we lean on the word of God and use allot less adlibbing and re-theologizing without the foundation of scripture. Which is a sure road to apostasy. As evident in all our seminaries where the word of God is no longer taught.
“The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it? I, the LORD, search the heart, I test the mind, Even to give every man according to his ways, According to the fruit of his doings. Jeremiah 17:9-10

“Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance, and do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones." Luke 3:7

“If a tree is bad, its fruit will be bad. You brood of snakes! How could evil men like you speak what is good and right? For whatever is in your heart determines what you say. A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart."
Matthew 12:33-35

Then you say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we would never have joined them in killing the prophets.’ “But in saying that, you testify against yourselves that you are indeed the descendants of those who murdered the prophets. Go ahead and finish what your ancestors started. Snakes! Sons of vipers! How will you escape the judgment of hell? Matthew 23:30-33

Why do you not understand My speech? Because you are not able to listen to My word. You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it. But because I tell the truth, you do not believe Me. John 8:43-45

No, I believe there is a time and purpose under heaven for the sword to be used as instructed by the Holy Spirit and mentored by example in Gods word. What I posted above is the word of God in good context and seems harsh, that is because it is supposed to be harsh sometimes as well as meek and loving.
For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Hebrews 4:12

I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all long suffering and teaching. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers;
2 Timothy 4:1-3

You have not yet resisted to bloodshed, striving against sin. And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons:
“ My son, do not despise the chastening of the LORD, Nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him; For whom the LORD loves He chastens, And scourges every son whom He receives.
Hebrews 12:4-6

Dear friends,
Here is how to recognize and deal with "hereticks".
quote:
2 Th 3:10 For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.
11 For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies.
12 Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread.
13 But ye, brethren, be not weary in well doing.
14 And if any man obey not our word by this epistle, note that man, and have no company with him, that he may be ashamed.
15 Yet count him not as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother.

What could Paul, the tent maker, mean by 'work'?
quote:
1Th 4:11 And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you;
ALL were to work with their hands.
He had taught this to the Ephesian bishops/elders/overseers, too.
quote:
Ac 20:30 Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.
31 Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears.
32 And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.
33 I have coveted no man’s silver, or gold, or apparel.
34 Yea, ye yourselves know, that these hands have ministered unto my necessities, and to them that were with me.
35 I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.

All of the bishops/elders/overseers were to work with their hands like Paul did. None were to covet the stuff of others. Each was to watch the others for signs of "heresy" (which was saying perverse things in order to draw disciples away after themselves).

So, every man that does not work and wants others to support him with their substance must try to draw disciples after themselves. To do so they must use words other than the words of the Lord Jesus Christ and the doctrine which is according to godliness.
quote:
1 Tim 6:3 If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;
4 He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings,
5 Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.
6 ¶ But godliness with contentment is great gain.
7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.
8 And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.

That sure seems to be applicable to a lot of religious people.

Here's one thought on discipline...

Church discipline requires humility. We use church discipline to help keep the church pure and to help wayward people repent. But Satan tries to harm the church by tempting it to use discipline in an unforgiving way. This causes those exercising discipline to become proud of their purity, and it causes the person who is being disciplined to become bitter and perhaps leave the church entirely. We must remember that our purpose in discipline is to restore a person to the fellowship, not to destroy him or her. We must be cautious that personal anger is not vented under the guise of church discipline

The following is a comment that I found interesting.

Date: 18 Jan 2006
Time: 14:49:42

Comments:

The following is from "The Glory of a True Church, And its Discipline display’d" By Benjamin Keach: under the heading "Of dealing with Hereticks and Blasphemers" the article is posted at: www.founders.org/library/polity/keach.htm. I believe it cast much gospel light on Preterism.

"AS TOUCHING HERETICKS OR HERESY, the same Censure, when they are convicted, ought to pass against them; HERESY IS COMMONLY RESTRAINED TO SIGNIFY ANY PERVERSE OPINION OR ERROR IN A FUNDAMENTAL POINT OF RELIGION, as to deny the Being of God, or the Deity of Christ, or his Satisfaction, and Justification alone by his Righteousness, OR TO DENY THE RESURRECTION OF THE BODY, or eternal Judgment, or the like…..SUCH THAT ARE GUILTY OF SCHISM OR DIVISIONS IN THE CHURCH, OUGHT TO BE EXCOMMUNICATED ALSO. Heresies are called Damnable by the Apostle Peter; without Repentance such cannot be saved, as bring in Damnable Heresies, denying the Lord that bought them.

Two things render a Man an Heretick according to the common signification of the Word. 1. An Error in matters of Faith, Fundamental or Essential to Salvation. 2. Stubbornness and Contumacy in holding and maintaining it. A Man that is an Heretick, after the first and second Admonition reject. Now that this Rejection is all one with Excommunication, appears by what Paul speaks, I Tim. 1: 20. Of whom is Hymeneus and Alexander, whom I have delivered unto Satan, that they may learn not to Blaspheme. THEIR HERESY, OR BLASPHEMY WAS IN SAYING THE RESURRECTION WAS PAST." [emphasis added]

These statements speak for themselves. Brother Keach addressess the FULL PRETERIST view and classifies those who hold to the view as "Hereticks". He believed that these heretics should be excluded from the Lord's church and that if they remained unrepentant that is proved that they were not saved.

Now, what do you think?

In Christ,
