In the garden of Eden, satan told Eve that "She would not surely die!" She didn't appear to, if she was looking for it to happen immediately. She was in the process of dying though, and one can look at it like this. She died the first death in that she became separated from the life of God. The fruit of it is bourn out in the fact that they would have to toil by the sweat of their brow, in the garden, which had been supernaturally maintained before they broke relationship.

The Son is life, and this life is lived out until the " redemption of the purchased possesion."

Rom 5:21 That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.
[TODAY]

Rom 6:16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
[THIS is in this life, as we walk with Him. The consequenses of continuing to sin, ultimate death.]

Rom 7:13 Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful.

Jas 1:15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.
[Again, separation from Life, who Jesus is, is death, the opposite of reconciliation. The results are bourn out in toil. Do you toil?]

Rom 6:20-23 20 For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness.
21 What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death.
22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.
23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

There is an unmistakable contrast being made here. The wages of sin is death, while the gift of God is eternal life. These two things are opposites. The word but, between the wages of sin, which is death, and the gift of God, which is eternal life, denotes the same. Life is life, death is not life, but, non existence. The same contrast is made in the most famous verses of the New Testament.

John 3:15-16 15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Here again, the contrast cannot be mistaken. Only instead of saying death, the above verses speak of perishing. This is because death, that is real death, the second death, is perishing. The one who experiences it no longer has life of any kind. Not in heaven or hell. They no longer exist.

I Jn 5:10-12 10 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.
11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.

The above verses could not be any clearer, eternal life is given to us by God, and this life is in His Son. Those who have the Son, have life. Those who do not have the Son do not have life. Eternal life is a gift from God, not something that each of us already has due to an immortal soul. This is a false doctrine of the church of Rome. Life is life, death is not. Burning alive in a place called hell, is life, not death. If the soul is already immortal, then why does the bible promise us eternal life so very often? Isn’t that a silly promise to make to someone who already has an immortal soul?

By for now. Y. b. in C. Keith

This ought to stir up passions. Rom 6:23 says “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Typically, without exception, this verse is used to say that if we do not accept Jesus as Lord and Savior, we will ‘go to hell’ when we die. However, the definition for wages is: rations, as in for a soldier – a stipend, pay!

In that it is a stipend, that is, pay, it is something that is drawn on a periodic basis, such as weekly, or monthly. I will contend that based on this, this passage means that a person, a believer, is paid for sin in their daily walk by their distraction from God, which sin is. In other words, death, as spoken of here is un-enlightenment, distance from God, not unlike what Adam and Eve experienced when they boobooed in the Garden of Eden. Who’ll work me over on this? Any takers? Is it sacreligious?
