Israeli Official: Temple Mount to Re-Open Within Days
By Fred Jackson August 16, 2003
(AgapePress) - An Israeli cabinet minister says despite threats of violence from Muslims, the Temple Mount will soon re-open to tourists of all faiths.
Rabbi Binyamin Elon, Israel's minister of tourism, is currently visiting evangelical Christians in the United States. For the past few years, Holy Land tourists have not been able to visit the ancient Temple Mount site in East Jerusalem because of fears of attacks by Muslim extremists.
But Elon says within a matter of days, that is going to change -- and he hopes the Islamic authorities will cooperate.
"I've received many, many requests from many Christian groups -- including congressmen and others -- and I can tell you, on behalf of the Israeli government, it's just a question days until the Temple Mount will be opened again to everyone," Elon says. "And I hope that ... the Muslims on the mountain will not have any objections [to that]."
Elon says even if Islamic officials object, Israel will exercise its sovereignty and unilaterally permit the resumption of visits by people of all faiths.
Known as the "Noble Sanctuary" to Muslims, the hilltop in Jerusalem is considered holy to both Jews and Muslims. And many evangelical Christians believe the site will play a major role during the end times.
