Authorities have arrested five Gilbert High School students over a threatening letter that outlined plans to lace the school with explosives and shoot their classmates.
A teacher confiscated a letter on Tuesday from one of the students, four girls and a boy, that referred to the plot. Excerpts from the note include:
"This will be the last thing you ever do, and you have to be willing to shoot people, you know. So tell me now if you want out because there won't be any chickening out on the day of the massacre. You will still go to jail even if you don't pull the trigger."
"I want this to be a total suprise (sic)! Completely out of the blue! Oh, I can't wait to see all that blood! Can you see the headlines? 'School Dies!' 'Dozens Killed!' 'Blood Everywhere!' Weeeee!"
Several of the teens told police they conceived the plot because of their hatred for Christians, Catholics and Mormons , and they wanted to seek vengeance on those who wronged them. But the students had yet to establish when the crime would occur, Fixel said.
The five, ages 14 to 16, were taken into custody on Tuesday and detained at a juvenile facility.
Gilbert police interviewed students at Gilbert High on Wednesday to rule out other suspects.
District spokeswoman Dianne Bowers said administrators will send a letter home with students on Wednesday to assure parents of the children's safety.
Lt. Ken Fixel of Gilbert police corroborated the report but had no specifics as of Wednesday morning.
On April 20, 1999, two boys, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, walked onto Columbine High School with guns and killed a dozen students and a teacher and wounded more than 20 others before killing themselves.
