TORONTO — Naked News TV, which features naked anchors, will premiere tonight on Citytv, the Toronto television channel that has pushed the boundaries of broadcasting since it went to air in the early 1970s.
"The news right now is sombre and morbid; there is a lot of stress and tension in the world and this makes the news a little more carefree," said David Warga, an executive producer for the Naked News Network. "I think Naked News should be an alternative to late night news," said Warga.
The show appears at first like any other TV newscast, featuring typical news stories gathered from the same news wires found in any broadcast newsroom. But as the show progreses, the news readers begin to strip.
Naked News anchor Athena King said "If you don't watch the TV screen, it's the same as listening to CNN." A former personal trainer and sometimes model, King primarily covers the sports beat. Ultimately she hopes to cover the Olympics in Athens.
Citytv is the first conventional station in North America to air the all-female Naked News TV show. The station touts the program as the first to successfully make the move from the Internet to cable television.
Naked News first launched in 1999 as a Web-based program and boasts that about six million people visit the Web site monthly.
The all-female Naked News TV will go to air at 1:05 a.m. ET Saturday. It can also be seen Saturday nights at 11 p.m. ET on Sex TV, the digital channel.
