Saddam blasts U.S. in Christmas message Tuesday, December 24, 2002 Posted: 3:58 PM EST (2058 GMT)
BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- A television announcer Tuesday delivered a lengthy message from President Saddam Hussein denying Iraq has weapons of mass destruction and accusing the United States of making up lies to excuse attacking "Iraq and our peace-loving people."
Speaking in Arabic over a full-screen picture of Saddam, the announcer said Iraq has been cooperating with U.N. weapons inspectors "not out of fear or weakness but to show the world the fakeness of the American claims, lies and deceit."
The Christmas Eve statement, which slammed the "American-Zionist campaign" against Iraq, reiterated that inspectors would find no weapons of mass destruction "as long as the inspectors conduct themselves professionally and technically -- and with no hidden agendas."
And, because no weapons would be found, the results of the inspections would come as "a big shock to the United States," the message said.
Saddam's message was addressed to "our great people and the people of our glorious Arab nation, especially the Christians among them." It frequently invoked the names of Allah, Jesus Christ and the prophet Mohammed and their teachings.
"The principles and teachings stressed in our holy faith in Islam and called for by Jesus Christ, peace be upon him, require us to pause at them and derive from them the great meanings of confronting the enemies of Allah and humanity."
"Yours is also a bright future, with Allah's grace," the message said in the conclusion.
About 3 percent of Iraq's 24 million people are Christians, according to the CIA World Factbook. The rest are predominately Muslim.
3% are christians and 97 % are muslim
24,000,000 % 3% = 8,000,000 Christians
