US politician seeks tit-for-tat bombing of Muslim holy sites

A US congressman from President George W Bush's Republican Party has called for Washington to respond to a future Islamic terror attack by bombing Muslim holy sites.

"If this (terror attack) happens, and if, in fact, we can prove that it was perpetrated by some fundamentalist Islamic - Islamo-fascist is really I think what we should call them - then you might think about this as a threat, the retaliation on their holy sites," US Representative Tom Tancredo said on US television.

"We are talking about a situation where our very lives are at stake, not just the life of the United States, but of Western civilization," Mr Tancredo told Fox television.

In a radio interview last week about Muslims and the war on terror, Mr Tancredo said US bombs could "take out their holy sites".

When asked if he was "talking about bombing Mecca," Mr Tancredo reportedly replied, "Yeah."

The Council on American-Islamic Relations condemned the remarks this week, and called for a retraction and an apology.

The group issued a statement saying it is working with leaders of Colorado's Muslim community to set up a meeting with Mr Tancredo.

He stood by his comments and even expanded on them.

"I'm offended when I hear the things that are said in mosques in the United States about the United States. I'm offended by what comes out of the schools that are called 'madrassas' that are nothing but really, in many cases, simply breeding grounds for future terrorists," the Colorado Republican said.

He expanded on his thought in an in interview with MSNBC on Tuesday.

"Remember what we're dealing with here," Mr Tancredo said.

"Every single day, we are faced with a threat from radical Islam. Every day we hear another story. Every day we hear another imam in some mosque say something incredibly outrageous, far more than anything I said."

Mr Tancredo said he hoped at the very least that his hardline stance might convince moderate Muslims to rein in extremist co-religionists.

"Moderate Islam to survive has got to help in this fight and if it takes some sort of catalytic statement like the one I made to help us move down that path, I guess I'm willing to say we have to go that way," Mr Tancredo said.

"It's going to take Islam reforming itself, taking care of this problem itself."
