Is Clinton Trying to Become UN Secretary General?

Bill Clinton's desire to succeed Kofi Annan as secretary-general of the United Nations when the latter steps down next year has now graduated from the rumor stage to that of a fact as well-established as such a thing can reasonably be at this point in the game.

In a way it's so obvious that one can reproach oneself for not having foreseen it sooner. At 58 and in reasonably good health (despite his recent bypass surgery), the former president can expect a decade, or even two, of potentially productive years ahead of him. And, barred by the Constitution from running for president again, his present rather aimless life must be a continuing frustration. He can travel almost anywhere on the globe, being greeted by adoring crowds and make a hundred grand or so per speech, but that's a far cry indeed from playing a genuinely important role in some major political context. What does a former president of the United States, forcibly retired at a cruelly early age, do for an encore?

The job of secretary-general seems the perfect answer. Whatever its defects and limitations, it certainly qualifies as a major post -- the closest approximation there is (albeit not very close) to a "presidency of the world." It involves frequent travel, lots of speeches and a modest amount of administrative drudgery, but very little really heavy lifting of the kind a president of the United States confronts every day. Best of all, the prestige of the United Nations is currently at an all-time low, thanks to the oil-for-food scandal and all sorts of other embarrassments (including alleged sexual misconduct among U.N. employees in Africa). Clinton could reasonably hope to improve matters and retire someday with accolades for having cleaned up the mess.

And yet, there are some major obstacles in Clinton's way. It's true, of course, that the United Nations would not normally choose a citizen of the world's only superpower as its head, but Clinton is so popular in many countries normally hostile to the United States that he is probably the sole exception to that rule.

More difficult is the problem raised by his wife's well-known intention to run for the presidency of the United States in 2008. No doubt the Clintons, with Bill at that point well into his second year as secretary-general, would try to depict the combination as downright beneficial: How convenient it would be to have the president of the United States whispering the nation's wishes to the secretary-general of the United Nations as a form of pillow talk!

But American voters might well be inclined to think that the world would be better off not being run exclusively by the Clinton family. If Jeb Bush's membership in the "Bush dynasty" is considered an obstacle to a presidential race by him in 2008 (and it is), what should we be expected to think of having the world's closest approach to a government, and the world's most powerful nation, ruled by a husband-and-wife team?

Then too, there is the question of obtaining President Bush's consent to Clinton's designation as secretary-general. It's all very well to say that his consent isn't technically necessary, and that, if it were withheld, many nations would cheerfully vote for Clinton just to put a thumb in Bush's eye; but the fact is that diplomatic protocol would absolutely require Bush's approval.

But, curiously enough, Bill Clinton has been snuggling up to the Bush family rather ostentatiously in recent months. President Bush designated his own father and Clinton as America's team to inspect the aftermath of the Indian Ocean tsunami, and the two were afterward reported to have gotten along famously. Clinton is well known for being able to charm a dog down off a meat-wagon, and he may now be focusing on the Bush family with something more than mere camaraderie in mind.

So keep an eye on Slick Willie, and let's hope President Bush has some other candidate in mind for the post of secretary-general of the United Nations. (How about John Bolton?)

as someone who supports Clinton and how he makes the world veiw the US this has put a major burden off of me!!!!!

I was just talking to someone online in Ireland yesterday and they said that Ireland is very supportive to the United states due to Clinton and what he has done for them.

from article; "And yet, there are some major obstacles in Clinton's way. It's true, of course, that the United Nations would not normally choose a citizen of the world's only superpower as its head, but Clinton is so popular in many countries normally hostile to the United States that he is probably the sole exception to that rule."

And sorry to offend people who don't like Clinton (there are plenty of good things about George W Bush but I feel that clinton could bring peace or more hope for peace that is very needed right now)

This news has seriously made me feel so much better about the world and everything. I have nothing against current head but clinton was willing to talk to other nations peacefully and though many may not like him due to his marital affair (but we all make msitakes)he was a great president. he did a lot for international politics.

this will help me get some much needed sleep and peace. I know the world is in need of peace but I cannot even explain how happy and content this makes me!

I am very happy for this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with you that President Clinton was good for the Country. He had the morales of an alley cat. But, he is not the first President to do this. I feel President Bush is destroying America finacally as well as putting our young men and woment in danger. Our Veterans health care has been slashed by President Bush. His primary care says that it is very important that my hubby be seen by a specialist as soon as possible, but because of the funding cut by President Bush, it will be July before they can see him. I am praying for sooner. But, there are alot of Veterans hurt by President Bush's cuts.

Discussions about Bill Clinton taking on this role have been ongoing for some time. It could be interesting, to say the least. I like the guy because I find him to be very charismatic, but at the same time I find charismatic people to be terrifying, because I don't know where their heart is or if they are a wolf in sheep's clothing.

Anyway, the world doesn't "need peace" as the poster above Betty suggested. The world needs Jesus. Peace will never come until He does. In fact, we are assured that things will only get worse in terms of war and hostilities...until a false peace takes place for a few years. Beware those who say "peace, peace."

One fact about Bill Clinton:

During his presidency, the sacrifice of unborn children was important.

He vetoed a bill to ban partial birth abortion twice.

He allowed fetal research on aborted babies to begin in 1993. He facilitated emybryonic stem cell use.

He just happened to be president during the 1990's when world wide internet use became available and popular. This is one reason why the economy was so good during his terms.

His presidency was built on the blood of innocents. He has a long history of taking advantage of women and using his office as governor and then president to exploit women.

In any other private sector of business that would have been called sexual harrassment and the the women's groups and ACLU would have taken him to court. He got away with it, because he strongly supported abortion on demand to the nineth month.

Abortions did not stop on either President Bushes watch. President Bush Jr. went to war to aid the gas companies which his family is into big time. Remember I am from Texas. If the war had been about terrorist, we would have never left Afghanistan until Bin what his name would have been caught. It has been proven that before President Bush Jr went to war he told his people to find me a reason to get Sadham. It was all about revenge for his dad. Sadly it has taken more than 1,000 American lives to do so. Not even counting all the people who came back with missing body parts. Where is Bin now? Laughing at us.

It is true no President can bring us peace because we are living in the last days. But President Bush would have Israel give herself away one parcel at at a time to Palestine. President Bush is no angel.

I'm really sorry you misunderstood what was meant here [Frown] This was in no way directed at your or meant to imply that you arn't a Christian! Please forgive me if I left that impression! (I'm Certain that Laurie didn't mean it that way either)

The Bible has Many Many prophecies of the End-Times and the Second Coming of Jesus Christ in Power and Glory. One of the things it tells us is that near the End, people will be crying Peace and Saftey, but then total destruction will come.

1 Thessalonians 5:2for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. 3While people are saying, "Peace and safety," destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.
4But you, brothers, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief.

The Only Peace that will ever come (true peace that is… the Anti-Christ will usher in a false peace for a short time and deceive most of the people on earth before Jesus comes back)… is the Peace that Jesus will bring once HE and His Saints (us that is) defeat Satan and throw him, his false prophet, and the anti-christ into the lake of fire (along with all who follow them). This is in the book of Revelation [Smile]

I hope that helps make it a little more clear?

It was on 60 minutes a person in the room at the time talked about how before Sept 11 that the President told them to find a reason. I can't remember the person's name, but then I am awful with names.

Before Sept 11 we had prove that North Korea was putting children as young as 7 in concentration camps. They showed a young boy on 60 min who had been imprissoned twice for trying to flee the country because he had seen his whole family starve to death. North Korea does not have oil. I can't help but wonder if they did if we would have helped those poor people.

I am sure that CBS has their own slant on President Bush, but I doubt that they made that poor little boy up. I think the truth is that politicians are in it for themselves and not for us. It doesn't matter what party they are from. They are concerened about paying back those who helped them get elected. None of them are for the guy on the street.

Now I think this is the most accurate statement yet!!! [Wink]

We don't need another political party,

What we need is repentance and revival

We need people on their face weeping for the sins of this nation,

and the sin in the camp (sin in the Church)

2Ch 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

Bush is an evil man, with an evil plan

In is own autobiography he admits to being a member of one of the most evil groups in the world “The Scull and Bones”.

But because he claims to be a “Christian” , and because being a Christian does not mean being Christ like any more, the majority of the ?Church? believe he is one.

No one believes in examining the fruit of the life any more and making sound judgment accordingly.

Please understand I am not defending Clinton either.

Or any other Democratic, Republican, or Independent they are for the most part evil men.

If they staned for the Truth of Scripture, if they take the stand of Yeshua, they will not remain in politics today.

The life of a Child of Yahweh that has the new heart as spoken of in Jeremiah 31:33 is a life of no compromise.

I consider worldy government to be irrelevant in the scheme of things, except that I follow the Biblical mandate of obeying the laws of the land, except any that would force me to contradict God's law. That said, Karl Marx had some interesting and good ideas regarding culture and government. The downside is that humans cannot execute such a plan because we are inherenetly sinful and flawed and there can be no utopia until the Millenial Kingdom.

**Also, in response to MySavingGrace, I was in no way saying you are not a Christian, but was rather referencing Biblical prophecy, a portion of which SoftTouch quoted for us above.

If you haven't had a chance yet, as a new Christian, to read the entire New Testament, I highly recommend that as a starting point. It will reshape your entire opinion and viewpoint of the world, the way it is, the way it will be, and what we should be hoping for.

***To 2Tim, yes we are to bring Christ's love to the world, which will sometimes help to bring "peace" in certain circumstances, but in terms of world peace, I do not believe that is our role or should even be our hope or expectation. We are strangers in a strange land.

I think America would benefit with a third party, a working class party like England has. BUT, all things aside, because we are living in the last days, things are going to happen a certain way not matter who is in office. We will and can not change God's plan. More and more I find people are like me, longing more and more for Jesus’ return. I do not feel that this is not with out meaning. I feel God is putting in our hearts a feeling of home sickness because He is coming soon! Back when I was a kid and even after I got married people would talk about God is coming back someday. But, today people are saying Jesus is coming soon! Even the world is becoming interested in the end times. Thus the sale of the left behind books and the Revelations show on T.V. I think God is stirring the earth with the realization that He is coming back for His own. I believe after the rapture there will be even sinners who will say that they thought there was something to that left behind stuff.
