Pro-Lifer: Reduce State Deficit by Defunding Planned Parenthood

By Rusty Pugh and Bill Fancher
August 23, 2002

(AgapePress) - A Virginia pro-family group says to balance the state budget, the governor should consider cutting funding to the nation's largest abortion-provider.

The State of Virginia is facing a deficit of almost $1.5 billion. Governor Mark Warner has said this will result in serious cutbacks for state government. Chris Freund is with the Family Foundation of Virginia. He says a good place to start cutting would be the agency responsible for thousands of abortions every year.

"We do have a very serious budget situation in Virginia, like most states, because of the ongoing economic problems. But we found that Virginia gives $140,000 to Planned Parenthood in this year's budget -- and we just feel like that's something that could be a great place to start in cutting to begin to save money."

The pro-life activist notes that one of Planned Parenthood's major initiatives is what it calls "reproductive rights" -- which Freund says is pro-abortionists' word for "abortion." Fruend says the money from the state goes toward teenage pregnancy prevention -- and part of that, he says, is counseling young women to have abortions. "We don't believe that the state has any business giving money to any organization that recommends to children that they have abortions," he says.

Freund says Planned Parenthood promotes not only abortion, but encourages teen sexual activity, and viciously attacks the only 100% effective way to stop teen pregnancy and disease -- abstinence.

Abortion Side-Effect
It is probably safe to assume the Virginia Planned Parenthood organization is not promoting the findings of a new study which indicates women who have abortions face the likelihood of mental problems within 90 days of the procedure.

The study, reported in the July issue of American Journal of Orthopsychiatry, found that women who have abortions are 63% more likely to suffer from psychosis within the three months following than women who carry their children to birth.

Joyce Wilson of the Pregnancy Decision Health Centers of Ohio knew that to be the case. "We have seen that for many years in our organization and the women that we deal with -- and men who have experienced abortions," she says. "So that isn't at all surprising to us."

Wilson says pro-abortion advocates fail to tell women about this problem "because if they acknowledge that there are these after-effects from abortion, then their story that there's nothing wrong with abortion can't be true."

"Many of our clients don't believe that they can acknowledge the serious depression, shame, and guilt that they're feeling because there wasn't supposed to be anything wrong with abortion to begin with," she explains. "It just makes the guilt and shame worse."

Wilson hopes this new research will save women and the unborn.
