Book Focuses on Life, Defining Moments for Beamer Family

By Allie Martin and Jason Collum
August 23, 2002

(AgapePress) - Extraordinary faith and courage of ordinary people is the focus of a new book by the widow of the most publicized hero of United Flight 93.

Let's Roll! is the book by Lisa Beamer, whose husband, Todd, uttered the now-famous words as he and others prepared to rush the hijackers of Flight 93 on September 11. Their actions are credited with bringing down the aircraft and killing all 44 aboard, but sparing the lives of possibly hundreds of other people as the hijackers attempted to steer the plane toward Washington.

In her book, Beamer says God guided both her and her husband. "I think the book tells the story of two regular people, the life that we built together -- and for us, that was based primarily on faith in God and how that played out for Todd on the plane on September 11, and how it's really influenced my life since then," Lisa Beamer said.

The book (Tyndale, $24.99) is as much about the Beamer's lives and faith as it is about September 11.

"There are a lot of subplots and a lot of stories and information about what went on on Flight 93," Beamer said, "but I think the story that weaves through the whole thing is really how faith looks when it's applied in life on a daily basis."

The Beamers were active members of Princeton Alliance Church in Plainsboro, New Jersey, as youth sponsors and Sunday school teachers. They met while they were both attending Wheaton College in Illinois.

Let's Roll! Finding Hope in the Midst of Crisis also discusses the birth of the Beamers' daughter, Morgan, in January, and how the tragedy has been turned into good, as with the founding of the Todd M. Beamer Foundation. The foundation, established on September 24, 2001, is a non-profit public charity that works to help children experiencing family trauma, such as the loss of a parent. The Beamer's children are exempt from the Foundation.
