Report: Israel threatens to strike inside Syria for Hizbullah attacks

LONDON Israel has warned that it will strike military targets inside Syria the next time Hizbullah attacks Israel, The Sunday Times reported yesterday.

The report quoted military sources in Israel as saying the government's position has hardened after Syrian President Bashar el-Assad ignored two separate Israeli warnings, delivered via the United States, to end his country's support for Hizbullah and Palestinian terrorists groups based in Damascus.

A third warning was delivered by Defense Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer when he met recently with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, who is to see Assad in a fortnight. Mubarak is reported to share Israel's assessment that "young Assad is playing with fire."

The paper quoted the sources as saying that Israel has come close to attacking Syria in recent weeks, but that suicide bombings focused Israel's attention on the West Bank and there has been a reluctance to open a second front in the north.

Former head of military intelligence Maj.-Gen. (res.) Amos Malka was quoted as warning that "sooner rather than later we'll be engaged in a conflict with Syria, unless Syria changes its attitude." He said Israel had been disappointed by the militant position adopted by Assad, who was thought to be keen to modernize his country when he came to power two years ago.
"Assad has not delivered the goods," Malka reportedly said.

"I'm not sure he reads the geopolitical map correctly, and he's taking unnecessary risks." According to The Sunday Times, IDF plans call for a swift air attack to destroy a brigade in southern Syria which contains some 100 tanks. This would be followed by an artillery assault and, perhaps, according to unconfirmed reports, a few days' occupation with helicopter-borne special forces.

Israel should strike Syria, Lebanon, and Iran for the actions of Hizbollah--an organization that they assist. Those three countries think they can use Hizbollah to strike at Israel with impunity. Hopefully, they will be proven wrong.
