Report: Heavy rains kill 17 in northwestern China

BEIJING - Torrential rains in northwestern China have caused landslides, cave-ins and floods leading to the deaths of 17 people, the official Xinhua News Agency reported Friday.

Downpours in the desert region of Xinjiang have set new seasonal records for duration and hourly rainfall, Xinhua said. Damage was especially bad in the Yili Valley, some 2,880 kilometers (1,800 miles) west of Beijing, it said.

Authorities expect more disasters as water levels rise further from snow melting in Xinjiang's towering mountain ranges, Xinhua said.

Up to 500 people may have died in flooding and mudslides sparked by storms across neighboring parts of western China earlier this month. Authorities in Shaanxi province have confirmed 152 deaths and have largely given up hope of finding another 300 missing people alive.
