Prodi announces a shake up plan for his team

ROMANO PRODI – The president of the Commission, Romano Prodi, will reveal today a major shake up scheme for his team, which will create a new inner cabinet with obligations to push through essential reforms drawn out for too long.

According to the Financial Times, Mr Prodi's move will create an absolutely new inner cabinet with fewer than 10 vice-presidents. The cabinet will concentrate on a "limited number of essential tasks" and would meet as often as once a week.

Although the new inner cabinet is expected to create noteworthy tensions, Mr Prodi hopes that with the help of the vice-presidents, the reforms could be pushed through before enlargement takes place in 2004. The Commission president is planning the reforms without changing the EU treaties.

Each vice-president would be given the task of supervising a group of areas, like external relations, trade, development aid and humanitarian assistance or employment, social affairs and training. "The step represents a bold gambit from a Commission president often accused of being weak and of leading an increasingly fractious team," the Financial Times commented.
