ISRAEL TO FENCE OFF WEST BANK TOWNS

Israeli authorities are to begin work on a controversial new security fence meant to deter would-be suicide bombers from entering the West Bank.

The Palestinians say the new fence will result in Israel effectively annexing a significant part of the West Bank, including Jenin and two other towns.

The Israeli Defence Minister, Binyamin Ben Eliezer, is due to attend a ceremony to mark the start of the fence's construction on Sunday morning.

The violence continued over the weekend and two Israeli soldiers were killed in a gun and grenade attack in Gaza which also left one Palestinian attacker dead.

The first phase of the plan is reported to involve 110 kilometres (70 miles) of trenches and electrec fencing separating the towns of Jenin, Tulkarm and Qulqilya from Israeli cities.

Jenin, a stronghold of Palestinian militants, is where the Israeli army says more than 20 suicide bombers have come from over the past 20 months of renew conflict.

The Palestinian minister Ghassan al-Khatib said the plan was racist, because it would not stop Israeli soldiers and settlers travelling into the West Bank.

There has also been criticism from the Egyptian Foreign Minister, Ahmed Maher, who said Israel's security would be better served by building peace.

And Jewish settlers are concerned about the political message of recreating any kind of division between Israel and the territory it occupied in 1967.
