A prophet is one who speaks for another.
A prophecy foretells some event that will take place in human history. It ( a prophecy) is so far removed in time from the actual event that it is impossible for someone to have predicted it. Prediction is based upon knowledge that we have, For example: if the date is January 28th, and we live north of the equator and north of the tropical regions then we could predict with a relative degree of accuracy that the weather will probably be very cool or perhaps even fold on January 29th. Another exaple: we know who is the President of the United States of America at this present time. Perhaps we also know of several other people who might run for the presidency at the next election. We might predict, perhaps with some accuracy, who the next president may be. However, we could not possibly predict who the President of the USA will be 200 years from now. The prophets of God prophesied (foretold) of events that would come to pass hundreds of years after their own lifetimes. They were able to do so only because it had been revealed to them. "Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost" (2 Peter 1:20,21) Jesus told his apostles that he would send the Holy Ghost ( whom the world could not receive) (John 14:16,17,26) to them (his apostles). The Holy Ghost would teach Jesus' apostles all things and bring to their rememberance eveything that he (Jesus) had said to them ( his apostles), and would guide them (his apostles) into all truth (John 16:13;Acts 1:1-5)- Quote Dr Gilbert Tripp D.D.,D.C.C. unquote.
