U.N. Report Clears Israel of Jenin Accusations

By Fred Jackson and Jim Brown
August 1, 2002

(AgapePress) - A new report out today from the United Nations confirms that Palestinians lied when they accused Israel of massacring hundreds of civilians in Jenin.

The Iraeli army moved into the West Bank city of Jenin back in March after a string of homicide bomber attacks that killed dozens of Israeli citizens. Jenin was targeted because many Palestinian terrorists have used it as a base of operation. When Israeli troops finally pulled out, a high-level Palestinian cabinet minister joined others in a campaign to convince the world that hundreds of civilians had been brutally murdered by the Israelis.

The report prepared by U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan concludes nothing of the sort happened. In fact, it says at most there were 52 Palestinian deaths over the course of the Israeli operation -- and only half of those were civilians. Another group, Human Rights Watch, said the same thing in an earlier report.

Israeli officials are welcoming the U.N. findings. They note the report also supports their contention that armed Palestinians deliberately took up positions in densely populated areas of Jenin, greatly contributing to the loss of civilian lives.

Meanwhile, a former presidential candidate says no peace treaty, peace conference, or a Palestinian state will stop terrorism in the Middle East. Gary Bauer, chairman of the Campaign for Working Families, says a battle is being waged against a "great evil."

"It was interesting to see that Hamas said that every Jew had to leave Israel and go back to their 'original country,' as Hamas put it," Bauer says. "I believe we need to understand, both here in the United States and in Israel, that we're fighting a great evil -- it's like al-Qaida. And unless it's defeated on the battlefield, there will be no peace in the Middle East."

Yesterday, the Palestinian terror group Hamas claimed responsibility for the attack at Hebrew University in East Jerusalem that left seven people dead. Among the dead were three Americans.

Jesse, Come Home
Bauer is blasting Jesse Jackson's recent attempt to meet with the leader of Palestinian Hamas. Jackson had wanted to meet with Sheikh Ahmed Yassin on Wednesday, but the visit was called off after Yassin's terror group unleashed the deadly attack at Hebrew University.

Bauer says Jackson needs to leave the Middle East. "I think Jesse Jackson is butting in once again where he has no positive thing to offer," he says. "The very fact that he would try to meet with the founder of Hamas in itself is counterproductive. Hamas is a renowned terrorist group, and to sit down with its leader is to give that leader legitimacy."

Bauer says Jackson ought to come home and spend more time trying to improve the condition of fellow blacks in America's inner cities -- rather than going halfway around the world, trying to tell Israel how to conduct its foreign policy.
