SPIRIT
A term used in the Scriptures generally to denote purely spiritual beings; also the spiritual, immortal part in man. Other terms (nepesh; psuche) refer to the animal soul or life of man, though it seems evident that these words are also used frequently in a broader and deeper sense with reference to man’s spiritual nature (e.g., Genesis 2:7; Psalm 42:2; Matthew 10:28; Matthew 11:29).

There are, however, passages (such as 1 Thes. 5:23; Hebrews 4:12) that emphasize a distinction between soul and spirit.

SOUL
The term soul specifies that in the immaterial part of man that concerns life, action, and emotion. Spirit is that part related to worship and divine communion. The two terms are often used interchangeably, the same functions being ascribed to each (cf. John 12:27; 1 Cor. 16:18; 2 Cor. 7:13 with Matthew 11:29; 2 Cor. 7:1 with 1 Peter 2:11; James 5:20 with 1 Cor. 5:5; 1 Peter 1:9). The deceased are mentioned both as soul and sometimes as spirit (Genesis 35:18; 1 Kings 17:21; Acts 2:27; with Matthew 27:50; John 19:30; Hebrews 12:23). However, soul and spirit are not always employed interchangeably. The soul is said to be lost, for example, but not the spirit. When no technical distinctions are set forth, the Bible is dichotomous, but otherwise it is trichotomous (cf. Matthew 10:28; Acts 2:31; Romans 8:10; Ephes. 4:4; James 2:26; 1 Peter 2:11).

Theologians have pored over these distinctions ceaselessly.

HEART
According to thorough investigation and evidence of Scripture in all its parts, the heart is the innermost center of the natural condition of man. The heart is: (1) the center of the bodily life, the reservoir of the entire life-power (Psalm 40:8, 10, 12) and indeed in the lowest physical sense, for eating and drinking, as strengthening of the heart (Judges 19:5-6, 8-9; 1 Kings 21:7; Acts 14:17; etc.), becomes the strengthening of the whole man; (2) the center of the rational-spiritual nature of man; thus when a man determines upon anything, it is called to “presume” in his heart to do so (Esther 7:5, marg.); when he is strongly determined, he “stands firm in his heart” (1 Cor. 7:37); what is done gladly, willingly, and of set purpose, is done “obedient from the heart” (Romans 6:17). The heart is the seat of love (1 Tim. 1:5) and of hatred (Leviticus 19:17). Again, the heart is the center of thought and conception; the heart knows (Deut. 29:4; Proverbs 14:10), it understands (Isaiah 44:18; Acts 16:14), and it reflects (Luke 2:19). The heart is also the center of the feelings and affections: of joy (Isaiah 65:14); of pain (Proverbs 25:20; John 16:6); all degrees of ill will (Proverbs 23:17; James 3:14); of dissatisfaction from anxiety (Proverbs 12:25) to despair (Eccles. 2:20, KJV); all degrees of fear, from reverential trembling (Jeremiah 5:24) to blank terror (Deut. 28:28; Psalm 143:4); (3) the center of the moral life; so that all moral conditions, from the highest love of God (Psalm 73:26) even down to the self-deifying pride (Ezekiel 28:2, 5-6), darkening (Romans 1:21), and hardening (Isaiah 6:10; Isaiah 63:17; Jeremiah 16:12; 2 Cor. 3:15) are concentrated in the heart as the innermost life circle of humanity (1 Peter 3:4). The heart is the laboratory and origin of all that is good and evil in thoughts, words, and deeds (Matthew 12:34; Mark 7:21); the rendezvous of evil lusts and passions (Romans 1:24); a good or evil treasure (Luke 6:45); the place where God’s natural law is written in us (Romans 2:15), as well as the law of grace (Isaiah 51:7; Jeremiah 31:33); the seat of conscience (Hebrews 10:22; 1 John 3:19-21); the field for the seed of the divine word (Matthew 13:19; Luke 8:15). It is the dwelling place of Christ in us (Ephes. 3:17); of the Holy Spirit (2 Cor. 1:22); of God’s peace (Col. 3:15); the receptacle of the love of God (Romans 5:5); the closet of secret communion with God (Ephes. 5:19). It is the center of the entire man, the very hearth of life’s impulse.

First:
We don't know the way of the spirit.
Eccl 11:5 As thou knowest not what is the way of the spirit, nor how the bones do grow in the womb of her that is with child: even so thou knowest not the works of God who maketh all.

Given that: Adam's body was infused with his spirit making him a soul. Gen 2

From Heb 4, soul and spirit are compared to joints and marrow. Likely the spirit is inside the soul as marrow is inside the bone. This explains why sometimes soul=soul+spirit and sometimes soul=soul, much the same way bone=bone+marrow or bone=bone.

Our spirit leaves our body when we die and goes to GOD. Eccl 12

This is the tricky part:
Jesus said the rich man who ignored Lazarus in life suffered torments in hell when he died. I believe the rich man's soul was in hell, not his soul+spirit.

When the spirit leaves our body it is dead. But when the spirit came into our body it made us a soul. Spirit is separate but inside of our soul. The soul made at birth does not die even though the body dies and spirit returns to GOD.

This is the best I uncerstand of body, soul, and spirit.

Heart, mind, emotions, feelings, thoughts, are functions of our soul. They aren't places.

Sacramento Pine - hopefully you will take, what I have to offer and make it your own after due and fair consideration - theology in its own language or speak so to speak has been trying to tell us that we are fallen - so what exactly is it trying to say - science to its credit in what may really be regarded as its greatest achievement dematerialised matter which means there just is no matter no matter who says or accepts otherwise - but some humpty dumpty scientists are trying to put it together again - what this really means if grasped is that we really live and move and have our being in a mental/spiritual world = mind/MIND - for nothing can exist outside of mind/MIND for there just cannot exist a flower somewhere that blooms unaware and wastes its sweetness upon the desert air - wincam
