How does God chastise His children?

He does not make us stand in a corner on earth, so how does God chastize His children?

Does He make unpleasant circumstances appear?

Or does He send "leanness" into our soul?

Or both of those?

Psalm 106:15
And He gave them their request; but sent leanness into their soul.

Isaiah 10:16
Therefore shall the Lord, the Lord of hosts, send among His fat ones leanness; and under His glory He shall kindle a burning like the burning of a fire.

So circumstances AND leanness, or...?
