Hebrews 9:27-28
And it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the Judgment:

Revelation 20:11-13
For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ(The Great White Throne).

And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was open which is the "Book of Life."

And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according the their works.

There is a stress on works in scripture even to Revelation, for character is not formed by merely knowing something but by knowlege combined with putting it to work until it becomes natural or a habit.

Over time the works we do whether they be good or bad will become our character and character follows a person right through the grave.
What a person has done, that is, what he or she has worked on during their lifetime here on earth follows them throught the grave-either in the Lake of Fire (The Second Death) or the Kingdom of God.

When God either now or in the day of Judgment summons us to stand before Him the books will be open. For everyone's life is an open book before God. No one can show anything other than what is written in the book of their lives.

For it is written:
For the Word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Neither is there any creature (dead or alive, visible or invisible) the is not manifest in His sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of Him with whom we have to do.
(Hebrews 4:12-12)
