I was reading the Psalms recently and I came across a verse that kind of stuck out in my mind

Psalms 19:13 Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression.

Does anyone feel that there may be a connection/relation between what David is saying in the Psalms and what the writer of Hebrews says in chapter 10:26?.......

For if we sin willfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,..

Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.

To get back to your question:

Hebrews 10
26 For if we sin wilfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remains no more sacrifice for sins...

This is actually odd, because BEFORE someone is saved, they sin wilfully (by then it is a habit, but originally it was a wilfull sin).

But even AFTER a person has received knowledge of the truth, they can and do still sin (from habit which was originally started as a wilfull sin):

1 John 1:8
If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

1 John 1:9
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

So it seems clear that even saved sinnes still have sin problems, but they are admonished to "confess their sins" so that the Lord may cleanse them again:

John 13:10
Jesus said to him, He who is washed needs not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and you are clean, but not all.

My Wycliff Bible Dictionary also speaks of the arrogance and pride as characteristic of presumptuous sin.......but it also adds....

Presumptuous sins must ever be distinguished from sins of ignorance and of infirmity. Sins are presumptuous when committed knowingly(Jn 15:22), premeditatevely, and deliberately(Prov.6:14;Ps 36:4), rebelliously (Jer 44:16; Deut 1:43) and repeatedly (Ps 78:17).

On the other hand, I can be said that our entire life and our entire being, is sin, sin, sin.

BEFORE salvation, ANYTHING produced by the soul was derived WITHOUT the input from the spirit of man (which in turn would have gotten its info from the Spirit of God), and basically Adam and his descendants "can't get anything right" once they abandoned the spirit of man and therefore also the Spirit of God.

We are sin through and through, and thus it becomes almost ludicrous to DISTINGUISH between "deliberate" and "premediated" sins as opposed to sins "of ignorance" or sins "of infirmity".

Because it is not just that we "do" sins, we are in fact "constituted sinners":

Romans 7:18
For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) dwells no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I do not find.

Isaiah 64:6
But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

I do believe that it must be important if scripture speaks of it. If it is a warning to us, then I do believe it is important to understand just what exactly we are being warned against. Do you see it as a warning?

Psalm 19:13 (NCV)

Keep me from the sins of pride;
don’t let them rule me.
Then I can be pure
and innocent of the greatest of sins.


TMSG states it this way:

Clean the slate, God, so we can start the day fresh!
Keep me from stupid sins,
from thinking I can take over your work;
Then I can start this day sun-washed,
scrubbed clean of the grime of sin.

So we need to beware of pride. I would certainly agree with that. I believe scripture renders many warnings against lifting up in pride.

The whole first Adamic life is a life of pride. It is pride that keeps a sinner from admitting that they are sinners.

Genesis 3:5
For God does know that in the day you eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and you shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

Jeremiah 49:16
Your terribleness has deceived you, and the pride of your heart, O you who dwell in the clefts of the rock, who holds the height of the hill: though you should make your nest as high as the eagle, I will bring you down from there, says the LORD.

Ezekiel 7:10
Behold the day, behold, it is come: the morning is gone forth; the rod has blossomed, pride has budded.

It is pride that keeps a sinner from admitting he or she is a sinner.

1 John 2:16
For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

The entire soul life since Adam is a life of pride, until faith, repentance and salvation came through Jesus. IT IS ALL PRESUMPTUOUS.

Psalm 59:8
But You, O LORD, shall laugh at them; You shall have all the heathen in derision.

Luke 10:21
In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit and said, I thank You, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent, and have revealed them to babes: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in Your sight.

Evidently, according to Paul's writings, we(as believers) can be tempted into pride (boasting in the branches) and certainly David was speaking as a believer in his prayer to God.

What about the voice that says...."Well, I know that I am saved, and that is all that matters".......?????

Can that be a form of pride?
