Jacob ended up being a polygamist probably against his will. Jacob was only looking to marry Rachel, but Rachel's father Laban pulled a fast one on Jacob and put the "burka" and the "veil" on Rachel's older Leah and Leah kept the "burka" and the "veil" on during the marriage consummation, and look, in the morning, to Jacob's surprise, it was Leah!

So Jacob contracted wit Laban to work for 7 years for Leah and to work for 7 more years for her sister Rachel, and that Jacob did.

So now Jacob had 2 wives. Then when Rachel remained barren and failed to bear, Rachel gave Jacob her handmaid Bilah as a concubinal wife and when Leah stopped bearing sons, Leah gave Jacob her handmaid Zilpah as a concubinal wife.

So now Jacob had 4 wives, but more technically Jacob had to wives, and the sons of the concubinal wife Bilah were counted as Rachel's sons and the sons of the concubinal wife Zilpah were counted as sons of Leah.

But I think that Jacob would have been a monogamist if Laban had not tricked Jacob with Leah.
