I believe that when the Israelites destroyed the Bronze Snake from the 40 years in the desert, that it was over kill on cleaning up the corruption that King Solomon brought into Israel. I believe that if they had refrained from that and destroyed everything idolatrous that did not have any significance to God, they would have shown that they weren't earning their way back to God in as much as saying they know God. Any challengers? I say it is the same today, even after Jesus.
