Why do the heathen depict the Devil or Lucifer-Satan as having two horns and preferably wearing a red outfit?

What's the tradition behind that?

The return of Jesus marks the separation of the sheep from the goats. Christ is the Lamb of God, and what would be the opposite entity but a goat type personage.

Purity is marked by robes washed white as snow. What would be the antithesis of white robes but robes of scarlett.

One could also look at the greek god Pan, who had horns and goats feet, as an archetypical satan.

"Then another sign appeared in heaven; there was a great fiery red dragonhaving seven heads and ten horns, and on his head were seven diadems. His tailswept away a third of the stars from heaven and hurled them to the earth."

Perhaps that explains the horns,the tail, and the red color. [Wink]

I always thought that the devil being pictured with a red cloak and horns was really the product of the cartoonist; not necessarily the caricature by a pagan. [wave3]
