Megillat Bush - The Bush Scroll
Shvat 2, 5768/January 9, 2008

Today George W. Bush arrives in Israel to pay a presidential visit. Security in Jerusalem has reached a fever pitch and traffic will be intolerably snarled. The word is, if you don't have to be in Jerusalem today, then stay out. But the incredible inconvenience being imposed upon the holy city and eternal capital of Israel is hardly the issue. It is President Bush's message and intentions that deeply worry each and every one of us who is a part of this living body known as the nation of Israel. To our great regret this excludes the present "elected officials" who today populate the government offices in Jerusalem.

Every human being who treads the earth today and feels in his heart and soul an attachment to the G-d of Israel, and fears and hopes and prays for the honor of the G-d of Israel, and His city, and His land, and His people, must be filled with great trepidation as they await the word of Bush. Will he, as he has done so eloquently in the past, defend the nation of Israel against its sworn terrorist enemies? Will he defend the integrity of the land of Israel in its entirety? Will he defend the indivisible truth of the Holy city of Jerusalem and that raised plateau that forms its heart: Mount Moriah, home of the once and future Holy Temple, House of the L-rd? Or will he mercilessly press the weak and pusillanimous government of Ehud Olmert into compromising Israel's, nay, the world's future, by dividing, G-d forbid, the city of Jerusalem and the land of Israel?

The politicians can claim business as usual, but the truth is far from that. We are presently reading the Torah portions dealing with the confrontation between Moses and Pharaoh, between a single humble representative of a people of destiny and the leader of the greatest power in the West. In a political world, "Let My people go, that they may serve Me," can certainly be cast as the opening gambit of a political process that will involve many learned advisors and many ambitious bureaucrats who will spend months and years diligently hammering out an agreement that will demand "painful concessions" on both sides and satisfy none. But we all know that such a picture is patently false. There can be no compromise to a people's right and obligation to worship the true G-d of creation. There can be no compromise in serving the will of the Eternal. There can be no compromise in working to accomplish His desire for His presence to dwell here upon this earth in the place that He has appointed: Mount Moriah, Jerusalem.

In order to make clear to President Bush that there is a people called Israel in this land that does honor the will of G-d and will brook no complicity on the part of Israel's faithless government in any political plan or process that will stand in the way of or impede the will of G-d for the nations, the New Jewish Congress, the Sanhedrin, and the Holy Temple and Temple Mount Movements, have taken the extraordinary step of preparing for Mr. Bush what has been dubbed The Bush Scroll. This scroll spells out for the president the ramifications of the choices he makes on the future of the nation of Israel, the nations of the world, and, yes, on the president's own legacy. It is our hope to be able to have the scroll presented directly to President Bush upon his arrival here in Israel.
