Alabama couple survives tsunami with incredible photos to show

MOUNTAIN BROOK, Ala. - Back home in Alabama, J.T. and Caroline Malatesta still wonder why they - of all people - made it out alive from the Asian tsunami.

On Christmas Day, the pair were tourists on the Koh Phi Phi island of Thailand. By Sunday, they were survivors of killer tidal waves that left them tending the maimed and comforting those loved ones left behind.

"We keep asking, `Why are we still alive and why do we still have each other?' You can't understand it," said Caroline, 25.

It began as a three-month backpacking trip through Asia to celebrate J.T. having passed his bar exam. They wanted to indulge in time together before he started work as a lawyer with a Birmingham firm. Caroline is an accountant.

The Washington & Lee University sweethearts wanted to go far away and see life through a different lens. They alternated between 99-cent-a-night huts and four-star hotels, visiting Nepal, India, Southeast Asia. Last, they visited island beaches 30 miles south of mainland Thailand.

On the last morning of their vacation, the Malatestas made a lifesaving choice. They skipped snorkeling and sunbathing and instead climbed a lookout called The Viewpoint for some quiet spiritual time.

Roughly 400 feet above sea level, Caroline snapped pictures and J.T., her husband of 1 1/2 years, read from his Bible.
