Timeline: Mid-East bloodshed

Another suicide bombing in Jerusalem, despite heavy security
A spate of tit-for-tat attacks by Israeli forces and Palestinian militants has placed the US-backed peace plan, known as the roadmap, in jeopardy.

BBC News Online looks at how the violence has escalated in recent weeks.

10 September: Israeli missiles target the Gaza City home of Mahmoud Zahar - a senior member of Hamas - killing his son and bodyguard and leaving about 25 people injured. Mr Zahar himself escapes with minor injuries. Hamas later vows to attack Israeli homes.

9 September: Two separate suicide attacks leave at least 15 people dead and scores wounded in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.
In the first attack, at least eight people are killed - including the bomber - at the entrance to the Tzrifin Israeli Defence Force base, near Tel Aviv.

Hours later, a bomb attack outside a popular cafe in west Jerusalem leaves at least seven dead.

Sheikh Yassin survived an Israeli attempt to kill him

7 September: Israeli helicopter gunships attack the home of a Hamas member, Abdul Salem Abu Musa, in the southern Gaza Strip, injuring at least 12 people. Israel says the house was used as a weapons store.

6 September: An Israeli air strike on Gaza City slightly injures Hamas co-founder and spiritual leader Sheikh Ahmed Yassin and wounds at least 14 other people.
Hamas officials say Sheikh Yassin and his assistant Ismail Hanieh left the building moments before it was hit. The sheikh later warns Israel it will pay "a high price for this crime".

5 September: An Israeli soldier and a senior Palestinian militant die during an army raid in the West Bank town of Nablus.

30 August: Israeli helicopters carry out missile strikes in the Gaza Strip, killing two more Hamas militants.

28 August: An Israeli helicopter strike kills a Hamas militant, Hamdi Kalakh, as he is riding a donkey cart in the southern Gaza town of Khan Younis.
The attack comes hours after a makeshift rocket apparently fired from Gaza landed in the southern Israeli town of Ashkelon.

21 August: Israel kills Hamas leader Ismail Abu Shanab, a pragmatic political leader in Hamas, and two of his bodyguards. Palestinian militant groups Hamas and Islamic Jihad declare the end of their truce.

19 August: A suicide bomber wrecks a bus in Jerusalem, killing at least 20 people and injuring up to 100 others, in a serious blow to peace efforts. Hours later, Israel halts the handover of West Bank towns and cuts off contacts with Palestinians officials.

18 August: Talks between Israeli and Palestinian negotiators fail to set a timetable for the return to Palestinian control of two West Bank towns, Qalqilya and Jericho.

14 August: Israeli troops kill an Islamic Jihad military leader, Mohammed Seder, in Hebron.

12 August: Two Palestinian teenagers carry out suicide attacks, one in Israel and one against a settlement in the West Bank. Each attack has one victim other than the attacker.

8 August: After more than a month of relative calm, two Hamas militants and an Israeli soldier are killed in an Israeli raid on a refugee camp in Nablus. Two Palestinians die in protests that follow.
