ERIE TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A steel-hauling truck crashed into a school bus carrying first- and second-graders Thursday morning, injuring at least 20 people, including two critically, and tearing a hole in the side of the bus.

"It was just bodies all over the place," said Cliff Moore, an Erie Township firefighter who said he arrived at the scene 30 seconds after the crash.

"We have received four boys from the accident and a 67-year-old woman," Nora Murray of Toledo (Ohio) Hospital told Detroit television station WXYZ.

She said the four boys all were 6 years old, and two of them were in critical and two in serious condition.

The woman was in serious condition, Murray said.

Six adults and three children were airlifted to St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo, said Sarah Bednarski, hospital spokeswoman. She was not immediately able to offer conditions on the injured.

St. Anne Mercy Hospital treated three children and one adult. The extent of their injuries also was not known, Bednarski said.

She also said one patient was airlifted to the University of Michigan hospitals.

The bus was one of four in a caravan, Maj. Tom Scott of the Monroe County sheriff's department said. The first two crossed the intersection, but the third -- which carried 43 children and 17 adults -- was struck by the truck.

Pat Labelle, a Dundee accountant who was driving behind the bus, was the first on scene, he said.

"It looked like the bus spun three times. When I got to it, the kids were screaming," said Labelle, who had blood on his shirt. "They were screaming like there was no tomorrow."

He had a first-aid kit in his car, and ran with that to the bus. He crawled into the back door of it and started pulling children out in case of fire.

Aerial photos showed the front of the truck embedded in the bus, which was one of four from Pierre Toussaint Academy in Detroit. A boy, clutching a teddy bear, was seen carried off on a stretcher.

Erie Township is located less than 10 miles north of Toledo.

The flatbed truck was hauling three rolls of steel, WTOL in Toledo reported.

At least seven fire departments dispatched rescue equipment to the scene, WTOL said. It said two medical helicopters have transported patients to a Toledo hospital.
