JERUSALEM - A Palestinian girl was given a chance to live after receiving the kidney of a Jewish student killed in last week's bus bombing.
The transplant saved the life of 7-year-old Yasmin Abu Ramila, who suffers from a genetic disorder that leads to kidney failure.

Jonathan Jesner, 19, a seminary student from Scotland, died Friday, a day after he was wounded when a Palestinian suicide bomber blew up a bus in Tel Aviv.

Five Israelis were also killed, as well as the bomber.

"The family is very proud that [Jonathan] was able to give life to others," said Jonathan's brother, Ari Jesner, who called Yasmin's religion and nationality "unimportant."

"The most important principle here is that life was given to another human being," he said. "We are happy and delighted that [Jonathan's] memory will live on."

Yasmin was in good condition after Saturday's surgery, but hospital officials said it would take time to determine whether the transplant was successful.

"I don't know what to say to thank the family of the man killed in the attack," the girl's mother, Rina, told Israeli newspaper Maariv. "I grieve for their loss and thank them for their donation."

The girl's grandfather, Farouk, said the family had trouble getting Yasmin to Schneider Children's Hospital in the central Israeli town of Petah Tikva after receiving the transplant offer at midnight Friday.

The Israeli Army had clamped down on Arabs leaving at night the village of Aqab, between Ramallah and East Jerusalem.

Farouk said the family had to take a longer route.

Farouk thanked the Jesner family and said he hoped to one day meet them.

Ari Jesner didn't rule it out.

"I don't exclude the possibility but ... the wounds are all so open," he said. "We are very much in mourning."

more than this wonderful gesture, i was moved by the words of the brother of Jonathon Jesner, who explained that Jonathon had intended to train as a Doctor and return to Israel to practice..'in Israel both Jewish and Arab doctors work side by side with no regard for the racial origins of their patients'.
