Putin calls avalanche in North Ossetia major catastrophe

MOSCOW. Sept 21 (Interfax) - Russian President Vladimir Putin said all services that must provide aid to people and restore the infrastructure in the North Ossetian mountains, where a huge avalanche took place, "are in place."
"The tragedy in North Ossetia is a very grave catastrophe. I do not remember one like this," Putin said taking questions from journalists in the Kremlin on Saturday.
One third of the glacier that slid down a ridge is 70- to 100- meters thick, Putin noted.
"What counts most now is to find the missing people and restore the structure for supplying the region with vital necessities," Putin said.
He yet again pointed to the large scope of work, noting that much will depend on how the mass of ice, which contains "several hundreds of millions tonnes of water" will behave
