Yes, we can pray without ceasing, sometimes without audible thoughts.
There can be a flow of thoughts constantly in the back of our mind, but as you best described it, we can have "an attitude of prayer."

Thank you for this post, it was timely for me. I am in a situation where I've been feeling hopeless and like giving up. I am a prayer warrior in general and this post gave me the strength to continue.

In 1st Thessalonians 5:17, Paul admonishes us to "pray without ceasing". I refer to this as an "attitude of prayer". An old monk referred to it as "practicing the presence of God". Old timers today refer to "Pressing in & praying through". It's "getting down on yopur prayer bones" determined you're going to hear from God. it's not a lazy man's way of life, so it's not very popular with most christians. It does work. The first few times you pray through, you may have to await God's presence for hours, even days; but God always comes. For me, more often than not, a compulsion to grieve, to sob in the spirit, usually accompanies the presence of God. The old timers refer to this as a "burden of intercession". I give full vent to this compulsion when it comes. In the past, it's taken me hours for this burden to lift, but a peace always comes that's the presence of God's kingdom in my life. There are times when God won't let me know what I was grieving about, & there are times when I may suddenly see someone's face. I have to believe that's the person I've been praying for. There are times when I know I've prayed some kind of a miracle into my own life. More often than not I don't know who I was praying for. Each time I do this, it gets easier than the last to "get into God's presence". After months, even years of this kind of prayer, getting into God's presence takes very little effort @ all. I think that's what Paul refers to as "praying without ceasing" or what I refer to as an "attitude of prayer". When you really need to hear from God it's better to be in the habit of "praying until an answer comes" than to have to wait for days to hear from God. Is it not? I wish every christian I know would just make up their minds to hear from God just one time. I wish they would take the time to stay in God's presence until He comes into their presence. I've led praise & worship sessions in churches where I started mechanically singing praise & worship songs until I was caught up into the very presence of God & began to "sing in the spirit" & brought God into that service & saw whole churches on their knees agonizing before God. Before I went into those services, I locked myself in the church for several hours determined to hear from God, & I did. There are no shortcuts to "life changing prayer". You must be determined to hear from God before leaving your "prayer closet"; but it works folks.
