Well today is Saturday. Hal has slept in his bed laying down two nights now and today has been up and about and has been breathing fine. No shortness of breath. Very little pain except that which is expected with 5 broken ribs. The swelling in his abdomen, chest and legs and feet has again gone away.
PRAISE GOD!!!!!! That is Wonderful News!!! Please let us know the results of the next x-ray and how Hal is coming along [Smile] We'll keep you all in our prayers [thumbsup2]

I have to give a little praise report. As you know Hal is home. On Monday we had a chest xray to check his progress. I was very concerned on Monday after the xray. The xray showed that where his chest cavity had been almost totally clear upon leaving the hospitial, it was now again filling with fluid to the point that this left lung again was about half covered in blood and fluid.

On Tuesday, he was to talk with the surgeon who sceduled him to come into the office on Wednesday and they had planned to drain this fluid in the office on Tuesday.

Tuesday night was very bad. Hal could no longer lay down again. He was incredibly short of breath and we were afraid that this lung was again going to collapse. He had a very hard night... no sleep; sat up all night; his chest/abdomen and feet all swollen...lots of pain. It did not seem good. We had been praying that when he went in there would be nothing to drain. But nothing looked like we were going to have answer to that prayer.

Hal went to the surgeon's office Wednesday and the surgeon listened and poked and prodded and listened some more and told Hal that he was not going to try and drain anything in his office. He wanted hal to go to the hospital cath Lab where they could drain using a CT scan to see what they were doing.

This seemed odd and hal did not really understand, but on Thursday morning he was at the hospital. They put him on the CT machine and he layed down for the first time in two days now and miraculously was so comfortable that he fell asleep.

They woke him a few minutes later and told him that there was not enough fluid in his chest cavity to warrant the intrusiveness of the procedure to drain it and they sent him home.

I was at this point still worried. had our prayer been answered? I was there for the past two days to see his deteriorating condtition. I was skeptical to my shame.

I told Deb in an email that I did not know what to think.

Well today is Saturday. Hal has slept in his bed laying down two nights now and today has been up and about and has been breathing fine. No shortness of breath. Very little pain except that which is expected with 5 broken ribs. The swelling in his abdomen, chest and legs and feet has again gone away.

Praise God!!! He is faithful to hear and answer our prayers. May he forgive me for not seeing his hand immediately.

We are scheduled next week on Tuesday for another xray. I cant wait to see it. God is Good!

Hi guys: I wanted to try and update this morning. Hal is home. He was released Wednesday evening. It has been a little crazy around here.

Last I updated, Hal had come from surgery and had a chest tube which was draining the fluid and blood from his chest cavity that was caused by the broken ribs and he was on the ventilator.

That was Friday - I think. One day seems to have turned into another for me. We stayed at the hospital friday saturday and sunday, Monday I brought Desi home and went back to be with Hal; I stayed at the hospital Monday night.

The ventilator came out on Friday morning. Hal's left lung was functioning on his own. By that afternoon he was up and out of bed for a short walk around his room. Saturday evening, they had moved him out of ICU and onto the Respiratory floor. By Sunday, he was off of IV pain meds and on oral ones and had taken a shower on his own. Monday his cathater was out and he was making laps around the pod. 60 laps on monday but he was still on telimetry and they would not let him walk off the floor.

But, in spite of all this progress there came a word of concern....The last xray (they were taking them daily)had revealed a spot on the lung that they were not sure about, so they ordered a special xray with Hal laying on his side on the good lung.

This was very difficult and painful and the worry of the doctor was somewhat disconcerting.

The plan at this point was that the chest tube would remain in till thursday, and they might have to go back in if this spot did not clear up; but while Hal was back in his room after a CT scan and this special chest xray on Monday and the chest tube just came out of his side and fell on the floor. It was kind of scary - Hal said there was blood all over the bathroom floor and The nurses on the floor were in a panic. Only one remained calm and took charge. She backed him against the wall and got the opening covered and ordered everyone else to take specific actions.

Apparently there is great danger in this - first the tube is sutured in place and comes out with some serious pain and effort normally -(Hal had none) second there is possibility of the lung colapsing again after the tube comes out- additionally there is great protential for infection which would be a disaster.

There was a flury on the floor and all three doctors had been called within minutes. Respiratory Therapy was on standby to put him on a ventilator, I was called to the hospital.

They sent him down for another xray and CT scan to try and see what was going on inside.

After viewing these, the surgeon decided not to put the tube back in.

Stating that perhaps this was God's way of telling us all that he has other plans. This was such an awesome statement to us! The spot that had them worried in the first place seemed to have disappeared. They would wait and watch.

By Tuesday the xrays looked great and there was almost no drainage from the site. Hal was now completely mobile on his own,no IV, No Catheter, no Chest tube; no oxygen.

His 02 sats were great and they began a new respiratory therapy machine that really helped to continue to expand the lung's capacity. By Wednesday, they were letting him go home.

It was like a whirlwind... every thing happened ahead of schedule. Wednesday night after leaving the hospital it was a little rough. It is cold outside and the cold air was a big shock to his lungs. We went to supper at Applebee's and he was in some pain from the cold air, but yesterday, he walked out to the mailbox and several trips out to his van to get things and he slept laying down... which he was not doing in the hospital. Today he plans to work. I am going to drive and he is going to visit his stores.

The final word is 5 broken ribs and there is some pneumonia in the lower lobe of the lung and a small puncture, which they did not think originally was there, but now believe that this area may have been a weak spot from the accident that he had when he was a child. Still, his strength and lung capacity in spite of this has astounded his doctors every step of the way. His 02 saturations are completely normal.

The volume in that lung has increased 4x that which it was when he first came out of surgery though it is about 1/2 what it should be it is improving daily.

The capacity of the good lung is 100% inspite of the fact that Hal had been a 2 pack a day smoker for more than 20 years prior to this. He is now smoke free for 13 days without a patch and has no desire what so ever to smoke! He feels that God took the desire from him.

He will continue with breathing excercises at home to continue to build the capacity in this damaged lung, but the doctors say that other than a risk of pneumonia for the next year or so, there should be no permanent damage and the ribs they are going to leave alone. They expect that he will be sore for several months with those, but all in all the prognosis is good.

So.. we again want to thank you all for your prayers; we have no doubt that God has been with us through this and has done some miraculous things. His recovery has exceeded the expectations of all three doctors on the case in both speed and quality. It was awesome to hear the surgeon state that he felt that God had sent a sign of how we should proceed and that HIS wisdom is greater than man's. What a surprising witness before the whole floor's staff!!!

God is a Good God!

Amen and Amen!

Our Heavenly Father, We continue to lift up Hal and Linda during this time of recovery for Hal. As you have shown your Awsome Power in keeping his oxygen levels up with only one functioning lung (To your Praise and Glory!), We now ask that you would boost his immune system to fight off and defeat any secondary infection which may seek to attack his body, and grant him a speedy recovery. We also ask that you would touch him with Your Healing Presence and set your angels around him and Linda both as they walk through this serious trial together. We ask too that you would comfort Hal, Linda, and their daughters and give them Your peace and strength in this time. We Praise and Thank You for these Precious Brethern, their Obedience to Your Holy Word, their testimonies to Your Glory, and ask Your Blessings upon them now. This we ask in the name above all names, Jesus Christ. Amen

Thank you for the update Sis. We will continue to pray for Hal and you, and all of your family.

Father please continue to hold Hal and Linda, and each of their dear ones in Your hand, and minister Your healing touch to Hal's body, and Your peace, comfort, and blessed assurance to Linda and the girls. Bless Linda and watch over her as she commutes back and forth, and grant her strength Father to persevere during this time of great trial. Hi guys: today has been a rough day. I started out of here early so I could do Hal's stores and be at the hospital in time for surgery. His pocket PC went on me at the very first store... not good. Reporting is important and that requires the PC. I did the stores anyway and it snowed a terrible snow in Rapid City, wet heavy windy icy snow. I made it to the hospital just as they were taking him down to pre-op.

My oldest daughter came bringing much needed coffee and food and to sit with me at the hospital as did our pastor and that was nice. Especially when what was supposed to be a simple 1 hour max procedure turned to 2 hours.

The surgeon finally came out; he said that they removed 2 quarts of blood from Hal's chest cavity. This was from the broken ribs. There are 5!!!!!! He said that each rib has a vein and artery that runs underneath it and when you break a rib and it seperates it tears these. This blood of course got old in there and clotted and this eventually collapsed the lung by the wieght of it. There is not a puncture!!!! Praise God for that. They put in a drain and cleaned all this blood tissue out, but the bad thing is that this procedure is done on the side, and so Hal had to lay on his side with the good lung. Hal is 6'4" and 365 lbs. He looks like a linebacker. He has a 58" chest. The doctor said the sheer mass of his size in the chest area made it so that they could not keep him adequately breathing with him laying on the side with the only working lung, so that had to put him on a ventilator. The doctor said this will also help him because it makes that lung to work again and that will speed its restoration to health. But they were keeping him out... asleep all night so that he did not fight the tube. I was not prepared to not be able to talk with him after the surgery so I had my first real breakdown fall apart cry of this whole ordeal when Maraiah called from school to hear the results. Ughhhhh, I miss him. I depend on him so much... he takes care of me, he spoils me; he makes the decisions; I dont do anything without talking it over with him. Tonight not being able to just talk to him was so awfull, I dont have words.

I had to come home to get the laptop and find the charger for the handheld and get these stores reported, but I am going back to spend the night at the hospital, because I am sure in the morning when he awakes and finds he is on this machine he is going to freak. He will have no idea what has happended or why he is not breathing on his own and I want to be there.

Thats not much news; At this point it is day by day. I will know more tomorrow. Thanks for your continued prayers; they are great comfort to me. I have a real peace that he is going to be fine. My pastor laughed at me because I am just not worried about him not being ok; today was the worst so far... not for worry, but just because I wasn't prepared not to be able to talk to him.

The girls really need to be lifted up; they dont have the peace I do. Desi is worried and maybe that is because she has not gone to see him; she does not want a picture of him in this shape she says. Her picture of her dad is the big tough guy that can handle anything and she wants to keep that picture. I can understand this, but it makes her to worry more I think. Mariah is having a hard time being so far from home; I think she is better today, but yesterday it took all I had to convince her that there was no possibility that something might happen to him and she not see him again. Helena is in Rapid where the hospital is, but has not yet been able to get in to see him because of the restrictive policies in ICU and is going through much of what Mariah is going through. She was pretty hysterical that they would not let her into see him last night. I had to promise her that he was going to be ok and that I was not keeping anything from her by saying that I knew h=e was going to be ok. I think when you are a kid even a 25 year old kid you kind of take your parents for granted and when faced with the thought that they might not be there tomorrow it is hard to grasp. They all seem to be really struggling with that.

Well, it is late and I have much to do and an hour drive ahead of me, so thats all for tonight. I love you guys. Thanks for your prayers.

Thank you all. He is doing pretty good today. We will be having VATS... video assisted thoractic surgery tomorrow at 3:30 PM TO assess the damage to the lung by the broken ribs and the situation with the ribs themselves. Apparently there are more than 2 broken and some blood has pooled and clotted or around the lung.

Prayer during the surgery would be appreciated. But I wont be able to update till tomorrow night, we are more than an hour from the hosptial and I will be there all day till they kick me out. They wont let me stay in his room overnight, which is very stressful to him, as he wants me there all the time.

Anyway, he is in good spirits today; pain meds are allowing good productive coughing, he was eating and drinking and sleeping; most of the fluid in his body is gone now thanks to the Lasix treatments and He was able to lay flat for the CT scan. His o2 saturations with just the one lung and oxygen assitance have remained in the 90- 93% range and the doctors are thrilled with this. We dont know what it is that we all got that stated this, but it is not the flu.. those tests were negative. he is on mega antibiotics so what ever it was should be a mute point soon.

Thank you for your prayers they mean so very very much! Our God hears and answers prayer!

Father I pray in agreement for our dear Brother and Sister, for healing, comfort, peace, and wisdom for the caregivers. Surround them with Your love and nurture and care for these precious ones, in Jesus' name.

Oh Sis! I knew Hal was having back troubles from a prayer request Brother Drew had made elsewhere, but I had no idea!

Ian and I will Continue to lift him and you up in prayer! If you need an ear, I'm just a call away! [hug]

This is easier than trying to email all of you back who are asking. And I would like you all to please cover us in prayer.

I finally got Hal to the Dr. yesterday. We went to the emergency room. He is in ICU in serious condition. He has only one lung working. They said that they call the picture of his chest exray on the one lung a "white out" it is completely white on the film. He has 2 broken ribs that he broke in one of the coughing attacks that he was going through. They dont know if it has punctured the lung or if the lung is filled or surrounded with fluid; They could not lay him down yesterday for a CT scan. They will do this today. So at this point the diagnosis is pnuemonia and 2 broken ribs. If they cant get his O2 saturations up they are going to put him on a ventalator. They are giving him Lasix to remove fluid. I will know more today, but his condition is serious. Please Please pray for us. Thanks, Linda
