HFHS I agree with what you said. That was what I was wondering, if she used the tears in the bottle or her own or both or what.

Do you know why Jesus said he wasn't offered water for his feet? You probably know but in those days feet were dirty because they didn't have paved roads like we have and they wore sandals so it was a custom that the maid, usually the maid with the lowest position, would wash the guests feet before they entered the house. It was a sign of respect.

Hisgrace, I don't think it's in the bible about the bottle of tears, but it was the custom at that time. It's more of a historical finding.

Good scripture bygrace, I forgot that one.

Oh, I'm reading the posts as I reply lol

Thus King David prays, "Put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book?"
The verse in Psalm 56 is saying that God's people do not need to save their tears, since things done for the glory of God are kept on record in "God's book" by God Himself

I guess the author assumed she had used a tear bottle because of the tradition of that time.
Or just wanted to highlight the tradition because of the story?

Luke 7:36-38 (NIV) Now one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him, so he went to the Pharisee's house and reclined at the table.

When a woman who had lived a sinful life in that town learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee's house, she brought an alabaster jar of perfume, and as she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them.

I'm happy with this version. In at least 10 versions in Biblegateway it says 'with her tears.' Does it speak anywhere in the Bible about bottles of tears?

Here are the verses in the literal Greek:

Luke 7:38 and having stood behind, beside his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with the tears, and with the hairs of her head she was wiping, and was kissing his feet, and was anointing with the ointment.

Luke 7:44 And having turned unto the woman, he said to Simon, ‘Seest thou this woman? I entered into thy house; water for my feet thou didst not give, but this woman with tears did wet my feet, and with the hairs of her head did wipe;

Since Jesus does not say in verse 44, with "her" tears, it could be that she began to wet his feet with the tears from her weeping and also poured tears from a bottle or she could have only washed them with the tears she wept.

We dont know, but I still think that the information regarding tear bottles is interesting to know.

Either way her heart is certainly seen.

I read somewhere that this kind of perfume and in this kind of container was often kept as a .... I want to say part of a dowery - but I cant remember where I read this and have been searching to find it, it could have just been that it was a kind of heirloom that was passed from on... I dont remember but I remember thinking this was also interesting.

Does anyone know of this or has heard of this... that the Spikenard was not just valuable in dollar amount- but that the fact that it was Spikenard in an alabaster box also spoke to its importance?

Luke 7:38 says - Then she knelt behind him at his feet, weeping. Her tears fell on his feet, and she wiped them off with her hair. Then she kept kissing his feet and putting perfume on them.

(I checked five different versions and they said that they were her tears that fell on his feet.)

OH BA no wonder we love you on this forum. You sure know how to make someone smile. However, as precious as I think you are, I won't be bidding on your gallons. [Wink]

I was thinking tonight and I was told about the tears in school and I totally forgot so I'm glad you brought it up again. Especially since the teacher that told us has left Pinecrest. Her husband is Mark Swiger and they have a huge evangelical ministry in India. I think they may have a site, but not sure.

Wow! That was Awsome! I never knew there was such a tradition of catching one's tears in a bottle like that. It sure does bring a lot more meaning to that passage (knowing what the tears meant to the people of that time). Excellent! Thanks for sharing this Sis!

No it doesn't, I just assumed that she caught the current tears she was crying and used them?
I don't know for sure, seems like it would make it easier to do.
I do like the history though, I had no idea about this tradition.

(Luke 7:38)

"She began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head."

We find reference in many old books to the custom of collecting the tears of the whole family and preserving them in bottles. Thus King David prays, "Put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book?"
Tear bottles have been found in very large numberson opening ancient tombs. They are made of thin glass usually, although the very poor sometimes had just simple pottery bottles, not even baked or glazed. They were all made with a slender body, broad at the base, with a funnel-shaped top. Every member of the family owned a tear bottle and they collected the tears of the whole family.
When serious trouble or a death occured in the home, all the relatives came and each one brought his tear bottle with him.
As they wept and wailed, the tears rolling down their cheeks, each person took his or her tear bottle and gathered tears from the faces of all present.
This bottle was exceedingly sacred to them. It represented all the heartaches, sorrows and bereavements from the grandparents down to the small child. When a person died, his tear bottle was buried with him, as one of his most sacred possessions.
This helps us to a better understanding of what the woman did for her Master. She noticed the very discourteous way in which Christ was treated as a guest in the house of Simon the Pharisee.
He provided no water to wash the Lord's feet and no oil to anoint his head; so this poor, sinful woman, longing for forgiveness and a new life, took her tear bottle, poured the tears over his tired, dusty feet adn wiped them with her long hair. A great sacrifice indeed, done in love and gratitude to the Saviour. They could not be replaced and she might die without a bottle of tears to be buried with her in her tomb.
"She bathed his feet with tears."
