I finally got around to reading Tim LaHaye's book "Left Behind" which was first published in 1995. I haven't watched the movie with Kirk Cameron, and apparently there's another Left Behind movie in the making starring Nicolas Cage. Anyway, I found the book to be fast paced and entertaining.
Remember, it was written in early 90's. It was before the internet took off, texting, (9/11 and the Patriot Act (heightened awareness of terrorism), TSA (airport screenings), IRS (audits and snooping), the ACA (federal health care), etc. In the book, Tim LaHaye does include e-mail and cell phones, but written now would have likely have more kinds of technology. LaHaye does introduce futuristic environment-changing type of technology invented by Israeli's to turn desert to green (which I thought was pretty cool). The mark of the beast concept is not introduced in the first book, but there is a later book in the series called "Marks Of The Beast" (which I haven't read).
LaHaye's antichrist Nicolae Carpathia (he probably got Carpathia from the story of The Titanic) is well formed character and someone the world might well welcome. But I do wonder how different LaHaye would've made the character if he had Barack Obama to study.
Now, the book may not match up absolutely with perfectly scripture; however, it's an easy read that draws the reader in and certainly makes one more curious about end times prophecy.
