ISIT.

Don’t you mean, Never rely entirely on what people tell you

listening to the wisdom of others and learning from it, is a very admirable trait, being foolish enough to believe everything you are told is something else entirely.

Hello Josh,
What I can tell you is what worked for me - about smoking. I wanted to stop smoking but realized I could not do it alone. [Eek!] Another Christian told me that this worked for him. Each time I lit a cigarette, I silently thanked Jesus for the day when I would not smoke anymore. GRADUALLY, little by little, the craving left me. [clap2]
This is how it is with the way God works. He is more gentle and loving with us than we are with ourselves or each other. [Smile] God knows you better than YOU know you and He will grow you at the pace that is exactly right for you.All you need to do is keep trusting Him. [thumbsup2]
God Bless You

Painfully sad, but true - Tyme said something very important, always make sure you go back to read the scriptures to see what is true. Never rely on what people tell you, always rely and beleive what the scriptures says, The scriptures were written being under the inspiration of the Spirit of God.

Seek God
Seek God
Seek God

Make your first and foremost priority to seek and know God more and more.

Don't seek Him with the motivation of being rid of bad habits.
Just seek Him simply for the reason that He is your creator, your Lord, your Savior, He loves you, and you want to know Him more intimately.

As you seek Him and come to know Him more (taking your eyes off of yourself - then focusing them on Him)He will change your heart, your desires, your life.

Matthew 6:31-34
Therefore do not be anxious, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, With what shall we be clothed?
For the nations seek after all these things. For your heavenly Father knows that you have need of all these things.
But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added to you.
Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow; for tomorrow shall be anxious for its own things. Sufficient to the day is the evil of it.

Greetings Josh. Welcome to these boards.

What a wonderful Question you have placed down. As a new Christian, I shall do my humble best to ensure that you receive from me what is called “Spritual Milk” as opposed to getting overwhelmed with all that is thrown about to and fro, and what have you. The way it starts is simple answers, to hard questions. Then as you progress and learn, you shall become ready for more complex answers and explanations and become more immersed into the fuller knowledge of God and Christ.

Now on to your question about Receiving the Holy Spirit.

You have received the Holy Spirit, the day you asked Christ to Save you. The Comforter was sent to you, but your spirit is still new, like a new born infant (Hence why it is called being Born Again)

Expecting to see wondrous divine powers the day you become a Christian, is like expecting to run around the world, the day you learned to walk. Things take time, and devotion.

For example, your habit, be it smoking, drinking, cursing, or what ever. Can be taken from you, but you need to put your faith in God to do it with you. God gave us free will, the ability to choose (Which is how we all got to where we are today) right and wrong. Sadly, most of us choose Wrong. Now, correcting a life away from God takes some time. My Suggestion to you, is first, learn Who Christ is. Read the New testemnt. Start with Matthew. (I use NIV, because KJV can be a tad harsh on people that do not wish to learn Elizebethen English) I mean, how many of us blundered thought “Romeo and Juliet”, with all those thine and thou and wherforartthou and what have you. So read a simple Contemporary Translation, like the NIV.

Now, once you have struggled thought Matthew, then I want you to come back here, and present us with some questions you might have.

After we have confused you with all our different views, and then attacked each other claiming that each one of us is correct all the while turning your simple question in a fire field of debate, then I want you to go back to the Bible, and look for the answer yourself. After you have done this, you will come up with an ‘Feeling’ as to what you “Believe” is the right answer to this Question.

Then you can share your opinion of what you think the Bible says, but so at your own risk.

Tyme.

I think many of us have similar experiences. How long does it take people to quit smoking or drinking even if they see it as a sin? Some struggle their entire life with some issue, but God is faithful. What follows is part of a post I wrote to another on this board; maybe it will help:

quote:
The Holy Spirit of God moves in different ways. Pray for His help before you read your Bible. Something as simple as "God, I don't really understand what You want me to do or know or whatever... I need Your Holy Spirit to help me understand Your Word (and how you want me to live it)."

I'm not saying you'll get a bright light that'll knock you off your chair - then again, you might - The Spirit will persevere with you. It took John Wesley years before he got it - and he was already an Anglican priest by then. Luther had been a monk for years. The apostles followed Jesus for three years and still didn't get it - until the Holy Spirit came on them. The Spirit uses others to help sometimes.

Peter left these words for us about growing in our Christianity:
quote:
5 But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, 6 to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, 7 to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. 8 For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 For he who lacks these things is shortsighted, even to blindness, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins. 10 Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble; 11 for so an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 2 Peter 1:5-11 NKJV
It speaks of building on your seed of faith, and doing so inwardly until that faith shows outwardly in the living of your life.

The Lord bless you indeed.

The Holy Spirit comes to live in your heart the moment you get saved. I believe you are talking about the being filled with the Holy Spirit. I am not sure but I think that comes with alot of prayer and fasting. Sorry if I am not more help.

Luk 21:28 And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.

Hello my name is Josh, I recently learned that the Holy Spirit can help us overcome any bad habit or struggle we may have. But we have to receive the Holy Spirit first, how do we do this? I've asked God to fill me with the Holy Spirit but people have been telling me that you have to do other things like repeat a word over and over again or pray for hours. I've just simply asked the Holy Spirit's help but nothing's happened, I still have bad habits and stuff, can someone help? My name is Josh and I'm 17.
