(AgapePress) - A California school board has approved a mandatory class that would force teachers and students to undergo pro-homosexual "tolerance" and "diversity" training.
After reaching an out-of-court settlement with the American Civil Liberties Union and the Gay Straight Alliance Network, the Visalia Unified School District has agreed to allow the GSA Network to write the curriculum. All freshmen must take the class, which will be taught by high school juniors and seniors that are members of their school's Gay Straight Alliance.
The district's website, which describes the health-science program as a "lesson on anti-harassment/discrimination," claims the curriculum will not teach or in any way promote homosexuality, alternative lifestyles, or a particular worldview -- rather, that it will "promote human respect and civility."
Karen Holgate is director of policy for the Capitol Resource Institute, a pro-family public policy center based in Sacramento. Holgate says the class includes a 50-minute video in which a student who objects to homosexuality is referred to as a "narrow-minded moron."
"This is about redirecting the hate towards any student -- or any person, any teacher, any parent -- who disagrees that homosexuality is a normal, positive, and healthy lifestyle," Holgate says. "Then that person is now going to be called a 'narrow-minded moron' -- or other labels are 'homophobe' or 'heterosexist.'"
The pro-family activist adds that the settlement begs some important questions.
"Can a court mandate, then require, that all teachers who participate in some kind of training with which they might disagree or which violates their own personal religious views?" she asks. "And can the court require students to sit through something that their parents don't want them to do or that the children believe violates their own personal religious views?"
Holgate says she is hopeful Visalia's legal settlement will be overturned, because the case could have negative repercussions across the nation.
